Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each)
  • Weekend Requirement: Up to 1 weekend shift per month (Saturday or Sunday, 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • On-Call Requirement: Up to 4 call shifts per month (End of Shift to 7:00 AM), including up to 2 weekend call shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM on weekends)
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to meet facility needs, including sister units/facilities
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks; called off hours can be combined to equal 1 shift

Facility Overview

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet designated hospital
  • 21 Operating Room suites covering all surgical specialties: Trauma, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, Robotics
  • Nursing team: 75% Registered Nurses trained to scrub and circulate, 25% Certified Surgical Technologists
  • Charting system: EPIC
  • Parking: Permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage access; additional fees may apply for other parking locations
  • Note: During hurricane season (June–November, peak in August and September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience, with OR experience within the last year required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Radiation Badge required for this role
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Copy of Driver’s License and Social Security Card
  • Completed and accurate I-9 form with E-Verify attestation
  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years, including:
    • SSN Trace
    • Statewide and national criminal checks
    • Sex offender registry
    • FACIS 3 and international searches if applicable
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
  • Employment application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Verification of last 3 clinical employers (or all if fewer than 3)
  • Radiation badge process must be completed before starting clinical work
  • Clear, passport-style badge photo (frontal view, shoulders up, business casual attire) submitted by Wednesday prior to start

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Initial physical exam, updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or chest x-ray if previously positive
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination
    • Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days prior to start (no instant tests)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (August 1 – March 31) with documentation uploaded by December 5 deadline
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form

Orientation & Training

  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules (approx. 2 hours) prior to start; must be done on a computer, not a phone
  • First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay platform access provided after clearance
  • All required modules must be completed before or during orientation; failure to complete may result in being sent home
  • Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into OurDay platform

Additional Notes

  • Local candidates within 60 miles may be considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Block scheduling requests require manager approval and depend on unit needs
  • Facility may accommodate schedule changes but requires prior approval
  • Parking permit required for garage use; additional parking fees may apply elsewhere

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, academic Level I trauma center with a dynamic OR nursing team and advanced technology. Ideal candidates will have strong OR experience, be flexible with floating and call requirements, and meet all licensing, certification, and health compliance standards.
