Travel Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Provide nursing care for adult and geriatric patients on a general medical-surgical unit.
  • Patient census approximately 43.
  • Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6-7.
  • Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 – 07:15), 36 or 48 hours per week accepted.
  • Charge nurse role required for night travelers.
  • Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding is expected.
  • Assigned to every other weekend and must be able to work holidays.
  • May care for COVID-19 patients.
  • Assigned to Inclement Weather Team and Storm/Hurricane Team; may be required to report during catastrophic events or disasters.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience.
  • First-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience not required).
  • EPIC experience required.
  • Must be able to manage insulin and heparin drips.
  • BCLS certification required.
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.

Preferred Skills

  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification.
  • Charge nurse experience.

Patient & Unit Details

  • Patient population: Adults and geriatrics, general med/surg.
  • Procedures and care include:
    • Insulin drips
    • Heparin drips
    • Wound VAC dressing changes
    • High flow oxygen therapy
    • Occasional short-term BiPAP respiratory support (no additional training required)
  • No PCU-level patients on this unit.

Systems & Documentation

  • Medication and documentation systems: PYXIS, EPIC.
  • Communication method: SBAR.

Orientation & Training

  • Unit orientation: 24 hours.
  • Must complete facility-specific education modules including medication safety and annual compliance training.
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist (for North Carolina travel candidates).
  • Must complete required health screenings and immunizations (see Required Documents).

Scheduling & Call Requirements

  • Scheduling based on unit needs and preferences communicated to management.
  • Call required if assigned to a prescheduled on-call shift.

Required Qualifications & Certifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in North Carolina.
  • Minimum 2 years of medical-surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Experience in charge nurse roles.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.

Required Documents & Compliance

  • Photo ID (passport or driver’s license).
  • Social Security card (if used for I9).
  • Emergency contact form.
  • Confidentiality agreement.
  • Medical and employee information release form.
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframe.
  • Proof of required immunizations or titers.
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption (mask required if exempt).
  • Completion of facility-specific education and compliance training.
  • Proof of logging into facility’s learning management system (I-Learn) within 24 hours of account setup.
  • Skills checklist or competency exam as part of clearance.

Additional Notes

  • RTO (Request Time Off) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may result in cancellation.
  • Scrubs are not provided; navy color recommended.
  • Radiation badge not required for this unit.
  • Must be able to work holidays and be flexible for inclement weather and disaster response assignments.

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with solid med/surg experience, EPIC proficiency, and the ability to work night shifts in a fast-paced hospital environment with occasional critical care responsibilities.
