Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - Wisconsin

Job Overview

• Full-time position in a small Critical Access Hospital laboratory.
• Multi-specialty community hospital lab environment.
• Contract length: 16 weeks.
• Shifts: Day and evening shifts, typically 8 to 10 hours (examples: 6:00 AM–2:30 PM, 6:30 AM–5:00 PM, 8:00 AM–6:30 PM, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM).
• Weekend rotation required (Saturday/Sunday), some travelers may work every weekend.
• Holiday coverage expected with flexibility.
• No call or standby call required.
• Dress code: Any scrub color; lab coats provided.
• Department-specific orientation includes general orientation with lab director and 2 weeks training with techs.

Required Qualifications

• Certification: Must be ASCP or AMT registered or registry-eligible.
• BLS certification required.
• Minimum 3 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
• Generalist skills required: must be able to work in Chemistry, Hematology (including differentials), Urinalysis microscopics, and perform phlebotomy.
• Critical thinking, troubleshooting skills, self-motivation, and ability to work well in a team are essential.
• Travel experience is highly preferred but not mandatory if the candidate is experienced.

Technical Skills and Responsibilities

• Perform testing in multiple lab areas: Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Molecular, some Microbiology (gram stains/set ups).
• Blood bank duties may be required for assignments longer than 6 months.
• Phlebotomy is required.
• Experience with LIS system: EPIC.
• Equipment used includes:

  • Chemistry: Abbott Architect, ISTAT, Avox, Osmometer.
  • Hematology: Beckman DXH 600 and 690T.
  • Coagulation: Stago CMAX and Stago Start.
  • Urinalysis: Clinitek Advantus, Beckman Coulter DxU Iris 840m.
  • Molecular: Cepheid, BacT Alert.
