Registered Nurse (RN) – Coronary Care ICU (T4)

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week


Unit Details

  • Unit: CTICU/CVICU (Cardiothoracic/Cardiovascular ICU)
  • Beds: 24
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2, with a high number of 1:1 assignments
  • Charge Nurse role available (no patient assignment)
  • Nurse aides: 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) on days and nights during high census
  • Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Holidays: Worked as part of rotation
  • Scrub color: Navy
  • Telemetry system: Phillips
  • Intensivist coverage: In-house during days, on-call at night
  • Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7
  • Float assignments: ICU, Medical-Surgical, Telemetry units; possible float to other campuses
  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 days

Patient Population & Care

  • High acuity cardiac surgery recovery patients
  • Common diagnoses and procedures:
    • Cardiac surgery recovery
    • IABP (Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump)
    • CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy)
    • ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)
    • Lung, thoracic, esophagectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)
    • Empallas (likely Impella device)
  • High number of bedside procedures including bronchoscopy, Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, epidurals
  • Experience with IABP and CABG patients preferred

Required Certifications & Experience

  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • CCRN certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of core ICU experience required in specialty being submitted (Coronary Care ICU)
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Teaching hospital environment; experience with trauma and teaching preferred
  • Cerner EMR experience required
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
  • Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (exceptions apply for some units)
  • Strong IV skills required (no dedicated IV team)
  • Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
  • Must have natural hair color and no facial piercings
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Prior travel experience is required for some ICU specialties (ED, Neuro ICU noted; confirm if applicable)
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • Candidates cannot hold concurrent contracts with this employer
  • Must have been off permanent staff status with this employer for at least 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
  • Parking provided with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage
  • 50-mile radius rule applies (no local rates)
  • High acuity environment with frequent bedside procedures and complex patient care
  • Orientation includes education on lifts, restraints, and wound care (non-graded)
  • Facility enforces strict sterile field maintenance during SIMs Lab; candidates not competent in sterile technique may not be a good fit
