Registered Nurse - Emergency Department

Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for the Emergency Department in a high-volume Level II trauma center and comprehensive stroke center. The unit handles over 100,000 visits annually and provides care in a busy, fast-paced environment with diverse patient needs.


Unit Details

  • Unit Type: Emergency Department
  • Number of Beds: 101
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 4:1 (medical), up to 7:1 on behavioral holds
  • Staffing: Techs available for cardiac monitoring, triage, and unit clerks on days and nights
  • Equipment: Baxter pumps, GE monitors
  • Documentation System: Cerner
  • Scheduling: Every other weekend required; no block scheduling; schedule must meet department needs
  • Floating Policy: No floating outside the ED; must be flexible to float within all ED sections
  • Dress Code: Navy scrubs

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience in the Emergency Department (ED), including at least 1 year of ED experience within the last year
  • Experience working in a high-volume Emergency Department with over 100,000 visits annually
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a Level II trauma center and comprehensive stroke center
  • Current certifications required prior to start:
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
    • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
    • Crisis Prevention Intervention Training (CPI)
    • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Skills and Abilities

  • Teamwork mentality with ability to coach and provide real-time feedback
  • Flexibility to work across all areas of the Emergency Department
  • Strong patient experience focus, including use of AIDET communication and respectful behavior
  • Ability to maintain updated patient boards and keep patients informed throughout their visit
