Registered Nurse – Women's Services (L&D, Postpartum, OR Circulation/Triage)
Location: Nampa, Idaho
Assignment Length: 13 weeks (travel assignment)
Shift: Nights (7pm–7am)
Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
Hours per Week: 48 hours
Unit Overview
- Unit type: LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) with 14 LDRP beds (patients stay in the same room)
- 2 OR suites for C-sections where RNs circulate and recover patients
- 4 triage beds staffed by travelers
- Approximately 90 births per month (1,200 per year)
- Follow AWHONN staffing standards:
- Labor: 1:1 ratio unless 2 cervical ripening patients paired
- Postpartum: 1:3 couplets care
- Triage: 1:3 ratio, with resource nurse support if 4 patients present
- Diverse patient population including antepartum, 32+ week gestation, hypertensive patients on magnesium, BACs, TOLACs, gestational diabetes, and patients referred from home birth midwives
- Does not accept placenta previa or placenta accreta cases
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience in Labor & Delivery (L&D)
- Experience with Postpartum mother-baby care preferred (at least 1 year)
- Experience in OR circulation and triage required
- Ability to attend deliveries and provide 1 hour of newborn care
- Experience with magnesium sulfate management
- Ability to titrate drips (Pitocin, Magnesium, Insulin occasionally)
- Charge nurse experience preferred
- Certifications required:
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- STABLE certification
- Must be able to stabilize newborns, perform physical assessments, and provide care within the first 2 hours of life
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are welcome
Orientation & Scheduling
- Unit-specific orientation: 4 shifts covering C-section, labor, and postpartum care
- Compliance and EPIC Curio assignments must be completed before starting
- Scheduling:
- Shifts: 7am–7pm and 7pm–7am (travelers primarily nights)
- Resource and charge nurse shifts: 6:45am–6:45pm and 6:45pm–6:45am
- Travelers fill scheduling gaps; preference considered but no guaranteed block scheduling or working 6 shifts in a row
- Weekend and holiday work: No minimum weekend requirement; holiday shifts may be assigned based on unit needs
- No call or standby requirement
Additional Unit Details
- Charge nurses do not take patient assignments; an administrative supervisor is present every shift
- Resource and triage nurses may start shifts without patients and assist with breaks and deliveries
- One Certified Surgical Tech (CST) and one Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) per shift, though CNA coverage may vary due to sick calls
- OB hospitalist and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner available 24/7
- Anesthesia available 24/7
- Respiratory therapy available for troubleshooting vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow devices
- Telemetry capability present but no dedicated telemetry techs; RNs rarely need to read their own strips
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring system: Centricity
Floating & Dress Code
- Floating required to other regional sites within primary skill set (L&D, Postpartum, Antepartum) or as a sitter
- Hospital-issued scrubs required; must change into and out of scrubs at beginning and end of shift
- No acrylic, gel, or fingernail lacquer allowed due to embedded NICU proximity
Patient Care & Work Environment
- Common diagnoses: hypertensive disorders on magnesium, gestational diabetes, trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC), antepartum patients
- Unit serves a diverse community with many home birth midwife referrals
- No placenta previa or placenta accreta patients accepted
- Nurses expected to titrate drips and manage complex maternal-newborn care
Notes
- Travel duos must have two vehicles due to floating and multiple site coverage
- Radius restriction: candidates must live outside a 50-mile radius from the facility to be eligible for this travel assignment
