NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Work in a Level 3 or 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) caring for infants including premature babies as early as 22 weeks gestation.
  • Patient diagnoses include surgical infants, hypoxic injury, and other critical neonatal conditions.
  • Special procedures and equipment used: Therapeutic Hypothermia, Nitric Oxide, UAC/UVC lines, Broviac catheters, tracheostomies, gastrostomy tubes, ostomies, Tecotherm, BCPAP, Ram NC, Alaris IV pumps, Med Fusion feeding pumps, Servo ventilators, HFOV, Baby Leo, Giraffe incubators.
  • Unit systems include Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR, and 4P.
  • Float requirement includes Pediatrics, PICU, and nursery care for infants up to 12 months.
  • Self-scheduling based on unit needs.

Shift & Hours

  • Night shift only: 12-hour shifts from 18:45 to 07:15
  • 36 hours per week (3 shifts per week)
  • Patient-to-nurse ratios range from 1:2 to 1:4
  • Weekend requirement: 3 Fridays, 3 Saturdays, and 3 Sundays over a 6-week period
  • No call requirement
  • Return to Office (RTO) after booking is not allowed onsite; max 7 days RTO for auto offers

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), including experience within the last year
  • Ventilator experience required
  • Certifications:
    • BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing

Orientation & Dress Code

  • 24 hours of unit orientation provided
  • Scrubs color: Navy blue or white

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Background checks required within 90 days of start, including local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned
  • Drug screening required within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and annual updates required
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training required (not required for non-clinical)
  • Immunizations and titers required or boosters for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form required if titer negative/equivocal)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframes
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Various facility-specific education modules and compliance training required prior to start

Documentation & Other Requirements

  • Employment application must be uploaded
  • Professional references: 2 within 3 years for travel and acute care positions
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable
  • Confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and other facility-specific documents required
  • Photo for badge must be submitted promptly after signing contract (passport style, white background, business attire)
  • Corporate ID and I-Learn account setup required within 72 hours of contract signing, including proof of login

Patient Population & Care Focus

  • Neonates including premature infants and surgical cases
  • Infants up to 12 months in related pediatric units when floated
  • Care involves advanced neonatal life support and specialized equipment
