Job Opportunity: PCU/Oncology Registered Nurse

Location: San Diego, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work as a float pool RN across multiple locations including general medicine, surgical, neuro, oncology, cardiac, and orthopedic units.
  • Must be comfortable floating to 4 different locations during the contract and may float to Emergency Department Inpatient Overflow (EDIP).
  • Patient care units include PCU (Progressive Care Unit), IMU (Intermediate Medical Unit), Telemetry, and Medical-Surgical (MS) units.
  • Typical nurse-to-patient ratios: IMU 1:3, Telemetry 1:4, MS 1:5.
  • Documentation systems used: EPIC and Pyxis.
  • Schedule is provided 2 weeks in advance; no self-scheduling or blocked shifts. RN will be notified 2 hours before each shift about the assigned facility.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in PCU (Progressive Care Unit), with at least some experience within the last year.
  • Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience with Arterial Line (A-line) management.

Licensure

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for California.

Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • CHEMO Certification
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (verify with unit job description).

Health and Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; must be updated if break in service exceeds 30 days.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start.
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or 2 vaccines)
    • Hepatitis B (proof of vaccination and/or titer or signed declination)
    • Varicella (chickenpox) immunity
    • Seasonal flu vaccine strongly preferred during flu season (Nov 1 – Mar 31)
    • COVID-19 vaccine (current, including bivalent version) or signed declination.
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start; must be re-run if break in service exceeds 30 days.
  • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) required and must be updated annually. Float pool RNs must have passed fit test prior to start; no onsite testing allowed after orientation.

Background and Screening

  • Comprehensive background check within 6 months of start, including:
    • Criminal history with all aliases
    • Sexual offender registry
    • National criminal databases
    • DMV check (if driving is required; no DUIs in last 5 years allowed for driving roles)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and monthly thereafter.
  • California Medi-Cal search required within 30 days of start and monthly thereafter.
  • Two professional references required from leadership roles within the past 2 years, preferably including a manager or supervisor and a Charge RN who directly supervised the candidate.

Additional Information

  • No self-scheduling; shifts assigned by management.
  • Must be flexible to work across multiple hospital locations.
  • Documentation and compliance with all required health screenings, certifications, and background checks are mandatory.
  • Orientation and training modules will be assigned prior to start; completion is required.
