Registered Nurse – Emergency Room (ER)

Location: Utica, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 10:30 AM – 11:00 PM)

Job Description

  • Work in a brand new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department (ED) facility.
  • Patient ratios may vary due to high volume; expect ratios from 1:4 up to 1:5 or more during surge periods.
  • Must be willing to float to other units as needed.
  • Electronic Health Record system: Epic (required).

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York.
  • Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department (ED) experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Current certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support).
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course).
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification.
  • Completion of Harassment Prevention Training.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Experience with Epic Electronic Health Record system.

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID).
  • Emergency Contact Form (prior to start).
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year residence/work/school history.
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM (annual).
    • HHS/OIG (annual).
    • Education verification.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start date.
  • Fit mask test within 1 year and updated annually (specific N95 masks required).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (PPD, Quantiferon Gold accepted; Tspot not accepted).
  • Immunization or positive titer proof for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella (or documented history of chickenpox)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, declination, or vaccine series)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (Sept 1 – Mar 31).
  • Pneumonia vaccination or declination.
  • 9-panel drug screen within 1 year of start (instant drug screen acceptable).
  • Completion of facility-specific online learning modules prior to first shift.
  • Photo for badge (professional headshot, plain background).
  • Signed facility-specific job description and welcome packet acknowledgment.
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam (minimum 80% score or meet Angoff score).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for ER staff; expires every 3 years).
  • Color blindness test prior to start.
  • Skills checklist (annual).
  • Two professional references from travel, allied, or per diem acute care within 3 years.

Additional Notes

  • Locals are accepted at a local bill rate.
  • Due to patient volume, nurse-to-patient ratios may stretch beyond typical standards during surge periods.

This position is ideal for experienced Emergency Room Registered Nurses who meet the certification and licensure requirements and are comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume ED environment.
