Registered Nurse - Outpatient (Contract)
Location: New York, NY
Employment Type: Contract
Shift: 8 AM – 4 PM
Hours: Approximately 37.5 hours per week (7 hours per day)
Contract Length: 9 weeks
Job Summary
Provide safe, competent, and quality ambulatory care nursing based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice to a designated patient population in an outpatient setting.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver nursing care using Relationship Centered Care principles and the nursing process.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to develop, implement, and evaluate care plans.
- Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
- Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Facilitate patient-centered actions such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, Medication Review, and Discharge Wrap Up.
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to understand and improve patient perceptions of care.
- Address patient and family concerns promptly and escalate as needed.
- Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening in all interactions.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety in the outpatient population.
- Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
- Follow institutional protocols to identify and avoid high-risk behaviors.
- Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance initiatives.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply and inventory management to ensure adequate resources for patient care.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
- Maintain thorough and compliant documentation per regulatory and legal standards.
Professional Development
- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
- Demonstrate professional communication and ethical decision-making.
- Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
- Participate in shared decision-making through specialty councils and committees.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
- Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
- Experience in ambulatory care and outpatient settings.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing.
- Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience required for travel positions (not required for per diem roles).
- Demonstrated ethical decision-making skills.
