Registered Nurse – Emergency Department

Location: Lewiston, Maine
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Facility & Unit Overview

  • Level 2 Trauma Center with 4 critical care bays
  • Emergency Department (ED) with 190 beds in the hospital
  • Patient population ranges from pediatrics to geriatrics (pediatric patients approx. 5%)
  • Teleneurology support for stroke in cooperation with a major hospital
  • No Pediatric ICU; pediatric critical patients are transferred out
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients
  • Equipment includes ultrasound, bladder scanner, neuro tele computer, Care Aware handheld devices
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems: Omnicell, EPIC, SBAR
  • The hospital is a Joint Commission accredited teaching hospital

Position Details

  • Role: Registered Nurse (RN) – Emergency Department
  • Shift: Evening/Night (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Weekly Hours: 36 hours guaranteed
  • Weekend Hours: No guaranteed weekends off; scheduling aims to be fair
  • Call Requirements: None
  • Float Requirements: Travelers are required to float to ED holding area

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Maine
  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention)
  • Experience managing cardiac dysrhythmias
  • Experience caring for ventilated patients

Skills & Experience

  • Experience managing non-trauma emergency department patients
  • Ability to interpret and manage cardiac dysrhythmias
  • Experience caring for ventilated patients
  • Triage skills essential
  • Comfortable working with a wide range of diagnoses and patient ages in an economically depressed area
  • Familiarity with chest pain center and primary stroke center protocols
