Travel Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit (Night Shift)

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Shift Details

  • Unit: Step Down (Acute Care Hospital)
  • Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients
  • Weekend Requirement: 2 shifts every other weekend (Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday depending on rotation)
  • Floating: Yes, may float to lower acuity floors within scope
  • Local candidates within 75 miles radius are not accepted
  • First-time travelers are not accepted (prior travel experience required)
  • Must have been at bedside within last 6 months

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience
  • Experience with ventilators, titration of vasopressors, sedation medications, insulin drips, tracheostomy vents, arterial lines, external pacemakers, and chest tubes
  • Must have recent bedside experience (within 6 months)

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association only)
  • BLS (American Heart Association only)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all nurses)
  • Additional certifications may be required based on unit specifics (verify during onboarding)

Licensure

  • Active Registered Nurse license for Missouri accepted
  • Pending Missouri license accepted
  • Primary source verification of professional license required (NURSYS verification for Missouri licenses)

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start
  • Missouri Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR) check required for certain clinical roles
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually; facial hair must allow proper fit
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 – April 1)
  • HIPAA Acknowledgement, Latex Allergy Questionnaire, Confidentiality Form, Hand Hygiene Policy, Fingernail Policy, Dress Code Policy, and Regulatory Compliance Education must be completed and signed prior to start

Additional Requirements

  • Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required and must be updated annually
  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Employment application must be submitted and uploaded for facility review
  • Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
  • Orientation modules through online platform required for all RNs before start (approximately 16 hours)

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Step Down Unit
  • PCU experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience in ventilator management
  • Experience with titration of vasopressors
  • Experience with insulin drips
  • Must have been at the bedside within the last 6 months
