NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work in a Level II NICU with a 5-bed capacity, admitting neonates 29 weeks gestation and above (infants <34 weeks transferred to higher level NICU).
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 2-3 neonates.
  • Responsibilities include attending high-risk deliveries, neonatal resuscitation, stabilization, and transfer of higher acuity or lower gestational age newborns.
  • Cross-floating within scope to well newborn nursery/postpartum and other units as needed.
  • On-call requirement: 2 mandatory call shifts every 6-week schedule.
  • Weekend requirement: Minimum 4-5 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) and at least 2 Fridays per 6-week schedule.
  • No block scheduling; home address must be at least 75 miles from the facility (no locals accepted).
  • First-time travel nurses are not accepted.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri.
  • Minimum 2 years of recent NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care) nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Skills and Equipment

  • Experience with mother/baby and NICU II settings.
  • Care for neonates 29-34 weeks and >34 weeks gestation.
  • Proficient in blood glucose monitoring, feeding methods (bottle, breast, gavage), and isolation precautions.
  • Familiarity with standard NICU equipment: IV pumps, syringe feeding pumps, phototherapy equipment, incubators/isolette/Omnibed/radiant warmers, neonatal echocardiography.
  • Telehealth support available for neonatologist consultation.

Scheduling and Work Conditions

  • Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each.
  • Minimum weekend and Friday shifts as specified.
  • Floating between units and facilities may be required.
  • On-call shifts required every 6 weeks.
  • No block scheduling available.
  • Guaranteed minimum of 3 shifts every 13 weeks.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required.
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches.
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start.
  • Missouri-specific background checks including Family Care Safety Registry, Highway Patrol, and Exclusion List searches.
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone, opiates, oxycodone, PCP).
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Annual fit mask (N95) testing required.
  • Immunizations and titers required with no exemptions allowed for Neonatal ICU staff:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
  • Tdap vaccine or declination required.
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (September 30 – April 1).

Additional Facility Requirements

  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules (~16 hours) via online platform prior to start.
  • Annual HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policy reviews and sign-offs.
  • Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months).
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology, unit-specific skills, and dysrhythmia/EKG as applicable.
  • References: Two professional references required, preferably supervisors within the last year.

Notes

  • Travelers are preferred to have experience with couplet care but are not required to provide it.
  • Expect to assist with well newborn assessments and procedures when NICU census is low.
  • Must be able to stabilize and transfer higher acuity or lower gestational age newborns.
  • No pending licenses accepted; must have active RN license.
  • No local candidates accepted; must live at least 75 miles away from the facility.
  • First-time travel nurses are not accepted for this assignment.
