Job Opportunity: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (RN)

Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Specialty: Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 5 patients with mixed/shared acuity levels
  • Float required when census warrants
  • Every other weekend work required
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated but not guaranteed
  • Local candidates within 75 miles are not accepted

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience in Emergency Department or related specialty
  • First-time travel nurses accepted
  • Mandatory competency in phlebotomy and IV placement
  • Skills required:
    • General Emergency Department care (combined adult and pediatric)
    • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
    • Management of multisystem organ dysfunction/failure
    • Blood product administration
    • Central line care and management
    • Continuous IV paralytics and sedation
    • Emergency medication administration including IV vasopressors
    • Procedural sedation administration
    • Stroke (CVA) care
    • Isolation precautions

Certifications & Licenses Required

  • Current RN license valid in New York (Primary source verification required within 30 days of start)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA provider/instructor/RQI accepted
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA provider/instructor/RQI accepted
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – AHA provider/instructor/RQI accepted
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all RNs except birthing units and OR)
  • Other certifications may be required as per unit description (e.g., NRP, TNCC, EFM)

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York
  • Minimum 1 year of Emergency Department (ED) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Competency in phlebotomy
  • Proficient in dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • Skilled in management of patients with multisystem organ dysfunction/failure
  • Experience with blood product administration
  • Knowledgeable in central line care and management
  • Ability to administer continuous intravenous paralytics and sedation
  • Competent in emergency medication administration including intravenous vasopressors

Onboarding & Compliance Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • 7-year criminal background check (felony checks) within 3 months of start
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 3 months of start and monthly thereafter
  • Education verification from primary source required (transcripts/diplomas if no verification on file)
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, opiates, etc.)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Fit mask test (specific N95 models) within 1 year, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year of start; TB questionnaire accepted in lieu of annual renewal
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination required during flu season
  • Snellen eye exam within 1 year of start (not required annually)
  • COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required
  • Facility-specific documents and attestations to be completed prior to start
  • References: 2 within last 3 years (required for travel agency compliance)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required

Additional Information

  • Electronic Health Record system: Epic (preferred)
  • Scrub color: Any combination of navy and white
  • Charting: Epic system
  • Minimal Return to Origin (RTO) restrictions

This position is ideal for Emergency Room RNs with at least 1 year of experience who are comfortable working night shifts in a fast-paced environment and have the required certifications and competencies. Prior travel experience is not required.
