    About

The Diagnostic Imaging certification is offered for renewal only by the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP). The ABMP certifies candidates to practice diagnostic imaging physics. It has almost 600 certified physicists in active roles. It offers ongoing programs for the maintenance of certification (MOC) for its clinicians in Radiation Therapy Physics, Diagnostic Imaging Physics, Nuclear Medicine Physics, Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics, and Medical Health Physics.

What is a diagnostic imaging physicist?

A clinical medical physicist qualified in diagnostic imaging brings a unique perspective to the clinical team in a diagnostic imaging department. They function as a scientist trained in physics, including imaging and radiological physics, and also in basic medical, clinical, and radiobiological sciences.

The Medical Physics field is divided into three main categories: radiation therapy, diagnostic imaging, and nuclear medicine.

The ABMP tests the candidate's experience and knowledge in the areas of MRI technology, clinical magnetic resonance methodologies, and safe MRI practice.

Certificates are issued to candidates who have demonstrated their knowledge and proficiency by successfully completing comprehensive written and oral examinations.

    Certification

Currently, the ABMP offers three certificates in the field of radiological sciences, including:

Earning certification includes clinical experience requirements based on the applicant's education level.

Upon passing the prerequisite examination (Part I) in either General Medical Physics or Magnetic Resonance Science and both the written (Part II) and oral (Part III) examinations in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics, the candidate may be identified as a Certified Medical Physicist or more specifically, as a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Physics with a Special Competence in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics.

The ABMP also has ongoing programs for the maintenance of certifications in Radiation Therapy Physics, Diagnostic Imaging Physics, Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics, and Medical Health Physics.

    Renewal

The initial ABMP certification will be for 5 years and must be renewed every 5 years in order to maintain certification.
