Job Overview

The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) provides professional nursing care to individuals participating in inpatient and outpatient clinical research studies as well as standard of care patients. They work independently with minimal supervision following institutional, departmental, and nursing guidelines; and functions as an essential member of the multidisciplinary team performing clinical research studies while simultaneously providing direct care to research subjects or patients of various health conditions and of different age groups.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to;

* Participates in collaborative studies under the CTSA
* Collects specimens and/or data collection within the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and in other clinical areas as required for the implementation of approved protocols
* Becomes and remains well versed in the safety and regulatory aspects of clinical studies and adheres to safety guidelines and protocol compliance, conducts treatment and education, assists with data management, and maintains knowledge of regulations that apply to the safe conduct of clinical research
* Takes a leadership role as primary nurse, working as liaison between the study team, collaborating institutions, and the CRU to provide efficient implementation of the study protocol
* Performs duties in accordance with all applicable District of Columbia and federal laws and regulations and Georgetown's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards
* Works days, nights and/or weekends as scheduled or as needed with the understanding that the working schedule may be changed as the CRU census dictates

Work Interactions

The CRN operates as part of a team of both nursing staff and research assistants who assist the study coordinator and Investigator in protocol implementation.

They assure a smooth implementation of the protocol on the CRU - and that the investigator's research study is implemented according to protocol; and provides - as needed - education to other staff members at the CRU or collaborating institutions, regarding protocols for which she is the provides primary care; and standard of care to non-research patients. T

They interact with the multidisciplinary team, including study coordinators, investigators, research assistants, subjects and other health care professionals throughout the hospital system - and at our CTSA partner's institutions and within the community. These interactions include critical communications regarding patient's status as well as response to treatment.

Qualifications

* BCLS - preference for ACLS
* Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia
* 3 years of nursing experience with preference to acute care nursing
* Solid basic nursing skills, including but not limited to excellent phlebotomy and IV skills, assessment and implementation of nursing care procedures
* Computer skills for daily functions
* Excellent organizational and communication skills
* Attention to detail
* Self-motivated and directed
* Working knowledge of MS word, excel.
* Ability to adapt to changing patient care needs that are driven by the research environment on the CRU
* Eagerness to learn and quickly master new procedures and technology

Preferred qualifications

* Research experience
* Chemotherapy certification

Clinical Research Assistant, Clinical Research Unit - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Clinical Research Assistant not only provides services for the Clinical Research Unit, but also serves as a certified DXA technician/coordinator.

They spend approximately 40% of their time coordinating the care of DXA patients scheduled on the CRU for research and non-research reasons - care that includes independent review of the medical record for health history, further assessment of bone health history, technical completion, scan analysis, and results reporting to MD.

Additionally, the Clinical Research Assistant tracks scans, provides census data for billing, and establishes/maintains SOPs for their practice. They spend approximately 50% of their time assisting nurses with their clinical research and standard-of-care tasks, including taking vital signs, ECGs, phlebotomy, transportation of subjects, and pick-up and delivery of drugs from the research and main pharmacy; and they assist with processing, storing and shipping of laboratory specimens.

As well, they spend approximately 10% of their time assisting the unit in administrative tasks, such as taking inventory and ordering of supplies, copying and chart set-up, and fulfilling receptionist duties when the Unit Secretary is absent. As needed, they engage in coordination of prevention quality improvement measures and provide clinical and laboratory support for off-site visits.

They perform all functions in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Medical Center's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Work Interactions

The Clinical Research Assistant receives direct supervision from a nurse who delegates appropriate tasks and reports directly to CRU Nurse Manager. They function autonomously and are the CRU expert in matters of DXA operation and procedures.

They also report to the DXA training coordinator or designee for scan training and sign off until they are certified and deemed competent. Once competent and certified, they work collaboratively with the Training Coordinator to accomplish goals of DXA services for the CRU.

Qualifications

* Bachelor of Science or equivalent
* Experience performing clinical assistant, phlebotomy, and clinical research assistant functions
* BLS certification

Preferred qualification

IV insertion skills and DXA experience

The candidate selected for hire is expected to obtain International Society for Clinical Densitometry certification within the first year of employment, if they do not already have certification on date of hire.
