MedSTAR, Washington hospital is located a few miles north of the US Capital building in D.C. The OB department was truly my favorite place I’ve ever worked. They really appreciated my hard work and commitment to patient care. My first day, I noticed how the supervisor and several managers were hands-on in the department, answering the phones, caring for patience, scrubbing in the OR. That really earned my respect from day one. I’ve never worked a place that was perfect but MedSTAR was a pleasure. I came there for challenge and it did not disappoint. Most days it was very busy, but the staff in the OR, and on the floor made even the busy days enjoyable. I went there for my first 13 week, travel assignment, and ended up staying a full year. When I wasn’t busy in the OR, I enjoyed helping out on the floor, assisting the nurses, helping out as equipment tech, and assisting the environmental services crew. The unit has three operating rooms, 4 triage rooms, 4 additional overflow triage rooms, 12 labor and delivery rooms and 3 recovery rooms. You will see everything that the job has to offer at this hospital as the patients are diverse in their needs and their cultures. I wanted to be in a hospital where I could serve as many people as possible and this truly was the place. 3 to 4 C sections most days working as the only Surgical tech for my 12 hour shifts. They have a parking garage that’s connected to the hospital via a walk across bridge and also some offsite parking lots that have shuttle buses. Parking there cost about $60 per month for travelers which is very affordable. The hospital itself is huge as it serves thousands in the area. There were some days I had some downtime but this is a place you come to work and earn every dollar that you’re paid. I am a traveling OB surgical tech and was paid very fairly and treated with respect. To be successful, Work hard. Show up and clock in on time, Be prepared to start work soon after, check your operating rooms right away and make sure you’re ready for the first case or 2 as soon as possible, help others when you’re not busy, make sure all your work is complete before end of shift; that philosophy seem to work very well for me at this hospital. I made a lot of great friends there, had so much fun in the OR with the patients, the doctors and nurses. Got to save a lot of lives. Everyone I met there from people who worked in the basement in the sterile processing department, the cleaning department, secretaries, security officers, employees at every level, people were just very nice. I hope I get a chance to work at this hospital again!

Assistant Nursing Director (RN) – Pediatrics/PICU - Relocation Offered!About this Job: Are you an experienced PICU nurse looking for an opportunity to formally lead AND still want to work clinically with patients? The Assistant Nursing Director role is a great entry level leadership position that allows you to remain close to the bedside and serve as a front-line nurse leader. This role offers the chance to work directly with patients as well as coordinate the nursing and patient care delivery of the unit-based professional and support personnel; two 12-hour shifts per week working directly with patients and 2 8-hour shifts per week of leadership and administrative responsibilities. Unit HighlightsThe inpatient pediatrics division of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital consists of a Pediatric Transplant Unit (C5-1) and a mixed General Pediatrics/Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (C5-2). As one of MedStar Georgetown's Centers of Excellence, the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute draws pediatric patients from all around the world for our growing program, which recently introduced pediatric living donor transplants and domino transplants.Our state-of-the-art Pediatric Transplant Unit serves patients receiving care for life-saving organ transplants, including liver, small bowel and multi-organ transplants (liver, stomach, small bowel, kidney, pancreas and colon). The PICU team specializes in the care of complex transplant patients, such as pediatric liver, kidney, small bowel and multivisceral organ transplants, and provides the highest level of care to critically ill medical and surgical patients including those requiring high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, continuous veno-venous hemofiltration and inhaled nitric oxide. Key ResponsibilitiesThe Assistant Director of Nursing is a member of MedStar Health entity-based Division of Nursing and leadership team. Supports and collaborates with the Director of Nursing in providing leadership and oversight for a specific unit/department. Directs and coordinates the nursing and patient care delivery of the unit-based professional and support personnel. Ensures the provision of holistic, culturally competent, and person-centered, quality, safe, and cost-effective evidence-based nursing care for patients/families. Applies the nursing process within the context of the organization's shared/collaborative decision-making framework. Collaboratively manages the patient's transitions across the continuum of care to assist patients and populations in achieving or maintaining an optimal level of health and functioning. The Assistant Director of Nursing assumes administrative and leadership authority and responsibility on a 24 hours/7 days per week basis for the assigned unit/department.
