Job Description

American Traveler seeks an experienced RN for a Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring unit in a Level 1 trauma, telemetry setting requiring strong assessment skills and a valid AZ or compact license.

Responsibilities

  • Work in the Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring unit of a Level 1 trauma acute care hospital
  • 48-bed unit with 10 epilepsy specialty rooms
  • Patient ratios of 1:4 on both days and nights
  • Patient population includes epilepsy, extended EEG monitoring, brain tumors, subdural hematomas, scoliosis surgeries, TBI, and other neuro diagnoses
  • Some telemetry and Bipap management (RT to manage vents)
  • Required to float to Med/Surg and Telemetry units as needed
  • 12-hour night shifts with 3 weekend shifts in a 4-week period
  • Self-scheduling with holiday coverage based on unit needs
  • Uses Cerner EMR
  • IV Team (SWAT RNs) available for difficult IV access
  • Resource RN and charge nurse present on every shift
  • Perform advanced neuro assessments including cranial nerve evaluation and frequent monitoring for changes in patient status
  • Complete SIMs Lab competency for sterile technique; termination possible for failure to maintain sterile field
  • Education provided on lifts, restraints, and wound care during orientation (2 shifts on floor plus 12 hours classroom)
  • Team includes charge nurses, resource RNs, and PCTs for support
  • SWAT RNs and 24/7 pharmacy and respiratory therapy present for patient needs
  • Scrub color is Greys Anatomy steel
  • Returned employees must not have worked within the health system in the past year except for outside agency PRN roles
  • Travelers must have their own transportation
  • Utilize self-releasing velcro seat belts (not restraints) for patient safety
  • Candidates must pass all required testing to maintain eligibility within the region

Requirements

  • Active AZ or compact RN license required at time of consideration
  • Minimum 2 years of Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Current ACLS and BLS certifications required
  • Must pass initial dysrhythmia exam and SIMs Lab skills assessment (foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) on day 1
  • Strong critical thinking and neuro assessment skills required
  • Two professional references required, including one supervisor from the past 12 months and one peer or supervisor from the last 3 years
  • Driver’s license required for address verification (must reside at least 50 miles from facility)
  • No previous full-time, part-time, or PRN direct employment with the health system in the past year
  • Physical ability to lift, restrain, and provide wound care education
  • Natural hair color and no facial piercings allowed; men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
