Job Description
American Traveler is seeking a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring DC RN licensure, 2+ years of relevant experience, and strong intermediate care and telemetry skills.
Responsibilities
- Work in the PCU assuming care for admitted patients boarding in the Emergency Department
- Patient population includes adults with varying diagnoses awaiting inpatient placement
- Average nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-5
- Unit has 40 rooms and an average of 140 visits per day
- Night shifts: three 12-hour shifts per week (19:00–07:30)
- Every other weekend required
- Floating required to units of equal or lower acuity
- Uses Cerner for charting and Pyxis for medication management
- Assignment includes exposure to COVID-19 patients
- Scrubs of any color permitted
- Provide care for patients waiting in the ED for inpatient bed placement
- May manage patients on cardiac telemetry, IV insulin, hemodialysis pre/post, and a variety of medical-surgical diagnoses
- Team-based environment with interdisciplinary collaboration
- Modules must be completed pre-start and during orientation, with most candidates averaging around 12 hours
- Must be able and willing to care for COVID-19 patients
- Up to 7 days of requested time off is preferred; no time off permitted during the first two weeks
- Must not have been employed by the health system within the past year to be eligible
- Local candidates within 60 miles accepted at a lower pay rate
- Personal parking cost applies
Requirements
- Active DC RN license required, or proof of pending status with license in hand prior to start date
- Current ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum of 2 years recent intermediate care (IMC/Stepdown/PCU) experience required
- At least one prior travel assignment required
- Competency in ECG rhythm interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Must pass the Relias EKG Rhythm Interpretation Exam with at least 80% overall and 100% on lethal rhythms
- Experience required with IV insulin protocols, titration of insulin drips, feeding tube care, pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure, IV therapy/phlebotomy, starting IVs, heparin protocols, PCA, and isolation precautions
- Proficiency with Cerner EMR required
