Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric Oncology/Hematology position at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital, requiring strong oncology/hematology experience and port access skills on a night shift schedule.

Responsibilities

  • 12-hour night shifts (1900-0700), 36 hours per week
  • 24-bed Pediatric Oncology/Hematology unit, including 16 Hematology/Oncology beds and 8 Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) beds with an average daily census of 22
  • BMT section is a positive pressure environment; all RNs work interchangeably across all 24 beds
  • Patient population ranges from neonates to adults and includes solid tumor cancers, leukemia, sickle cell disease, aplastic anemia, and highly acute BMT patients (Day 0, 1, and 2 post-transplant)
  • Unit also regularly cares for pediatric behavioral health patients, including those with adjustment disorders, suicidal ideation, and elopement risk
  • Off-service (non-Hem/Onc) patients may be admitted provided they have no communicable infections or precautions, due to the neutropenic patient population
  • RN patient ratios: 1:3 for Hem/Onc, 1:3-4 for Observation/Off-Service, and 1:1-2 for BMT (acuity-dependent)
  • Every other weekend rotation required; modified self-scheduling applies and requests may not be accommodated
  • No on-call or call-back requirements
  • Floating may occur to general pediatric medical units (Ortho/Trauma, Gen Peds, Observation, ED Holds) based on skillset and census needs; no floating to Main ER, PICU, or NICU
  • EMR: Epic; IV Pumps: Alaris; Med Dispensing: Omnicell
  • Nurses care for some of the most acutely ill pediatric oncology patients, including those undergoing active treatment and BMT patients on Day 0–2; if a child does not require intubation, they are cared for on this unit
  • BMT experience (Day 0–2) is highly preferred; preferred skills also include end-of-life care involving Precedex drips, intranasal Versed, Ketamine drips, and chest tubes
  • Unit is equipped with cameras in care areas and has a rounding Psych Tech available for behavioral health patient escalations; manager approval may be requested if a traveler is not comfortable with the BH patient population
  • Support staff includes a free-floating Charge RN/Supervisor, Unit Educator (days), Task RN (10am–10:30pm), Unit Secretary (until 9:30pm), IV/VAT team, phlebotomy, RT (24/7 in-house), and security (24/7)
  • Orientation consists of a facility NEO and 2 days of departmental orientation
  • Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
  • Scrubs: Navy blue
  • Parking is free
  • First-time travelers will be considered if they have strong BMT RN experience
  • Candidates who have previously worked a permanent position at an AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year to be eligible

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and PALS certifications required
  • APHON provider card required (certificate only; CPHON and BMTCN are not required)
  • Minimum 2 years of pediatric nursing experience with strong Oncology/Hematology background
  • Port access experience is required
  • Proficiency in chemo administration, blood product transfusion, cardiac rhythm interpretation, blood cultures, central line care, PCA pumps, and heparin drips required
  • Candidates must reside at a permanent address 50 miles or more outside of the facility (locals not accepted)
  • At least one professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN is required for consideration
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
