Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele position at a Level I Trauma Teaching Hospital, requiring at least 2 years of Med/Tele experience and the ability to float across multiple regional facilities.
Responsibilities
- Night shift position, 7p–7a (36 hours/week)
- 36-bed Med/Surg Tele unit within a 874-licensed-bed Level I Trauma Teaching Hospital that is also a designated Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center
- High-acuity patient population including spinal surgery/spinal fusion, stroke, seizure, myasthenia gravis, brain tumors/lesions, and altered mental status (AMS)
- RN patient ratio is 1:4–6 based on acuity; surge staffing may increase ratios to 1:7–8
- Nurses are responsible for reading telemetry monitors and responding independently — no monitoring tech on unit
- EMR: Epic; IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Philips
- Every other weekend rotation required
- Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
- No on-call or call-back requirements
- Floating required within Region 2 (Pineville, Anson, Union, Union West, and Central Division facilities) and Region 3 (Cleveland, Kings Mountain, Lincoln, and Central Division facilities) per regional needs and within scope of practice — candidates who are not agreeable to floating should not apply
- Schedule is planned on a 6-week cycle
- Department support includes CNAs, a Receptionist/HUC, a 24/7 Charge Nurse, Phlebotomy (peripheral draws only), an IV/VAT Team, a Resource Nurse (as available), and 24/7 RT, Hospitalist, and Intensivist coverage
- Orientation consists of a facility-level NEO followed by 2 days of departmental orientation
- Up to 6 days of RTO may be approved, excluding holidays; hours must be made up at the end of the contract if contracted hours are not met
- Navy scrubs are required
- Free parking is available
- The unit is described as a high-acuity environment with a collaborative culture and strong leadership support
- First-time travelers are not preferred but will be considered
- Candidates who previously worked a permanent position at an AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year to be eligible
Requirements
- Active NC or compact RN license required
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Tele RN experience required
- Experience in a Level I Trauma and/or academic teaching hospital setting preferred
- Epic EMR experience required
- Core competencies required: stroke care, cardiac rhythm interpretation, trach care, PIV starts, chest tube management, NGT placement, and drain/tube management (Dobhoff, PEG tubes, Hemovac, JP drains, Flexiseals, Foley insertion/management, and PCA pumps)
- Medication drip management experience required, including cardiac drips, heparin, blood products, and IVF
- One professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN is required for consideration
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
- Candidates must have a permanent address at least 50 miles from the unit — local candidates are not accepted
