Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level I Trauma teaching hospital, requiring a minimum of 2 years of Med/Tele experience and comfort with high-acuity neuro and spine patients.
Details
- Work in a 36-bed Medical Telemetry unit (9T) within an 874-licensed-bed Level I Trauma teaching hospital that also serves as a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center
- High-acuity patient population including spinal surgery/fusion, stroke, seizure, myasthenia gravis, brain tumors/lesions, and altered mental status (AMS)
- RN-to-patient ratio of 1:4–6 based on acuity; surge staffing may increase ratios to 1:7–8
- CNA support with variable ratios, plus Receptionist/HUC, 24/7 Charge Nurse, IV/VAT Team, Resource Nurse (as available), Phlebotomy, RT, Hospitalist, and Intensivist on staff
- Nurses are responsible for reading telemetry monitors directly — no dedicated monitoring tech on unit
- EMR: Epic (experience required); IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Omnicell; vitals: Masimo (bedside) and Philips (portable)
- 12-hour night shifts, 7p–7a, 36 hours per week
- Every-other-weekend rotation required
- No on-call responsibilities
- Floating required within assigned region and scope of practice, potentially to multiple facilities across the region
Requirements
- Active NC RN license or compact RN license currently in hand
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Telemetry RN experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- Proficiency in general Med/Tele skills: cardiac rhythm interpretation, stroke care, trach care, PIV starts, chest tube management, NGT placement, and drain/tube management (Dobhoff, PEG tubes, Hemovac, JP drains, flexiseals, foley insertion/management)
- Experience managing medication drips including cardiac drips, Heparin, blood products, and IVF
- Comfort with post-op neuro and spine care, including patient and family education
- Skilled in assessing and managing acute and chronic pain, including patients with a history of substance abuse, using multiple modalities including opioid administration
- Experience with Epic EMR required
- Must provide last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth for consideration
- Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
- Permanent address must be located at least 50 miles from the facility — local candidates are not accepted
- Candidates who have worked a permanent position at any AHSE facility must be separated for at least 1 year before being eligible
Additional Information
- Provide high-acuity medical telemetry nursing care, including post-op neuro and spine management, pain management, and ongoing patient and family education
- Unit culture emphasizes teamwork, positive attitude, openness to real-time feedback, and a strong focus on quality metrics including CAUTI, HAPI, fall, and CLABSI prevention
- Orientation includes facility NEO plus 2 days of departmental orientation
- Floating is required within the assigned region to multiple facilities as needed — candidates who are not agreeable to floating should not apply
- Holiday coverage required for 75% of assigned holidays
- Up to 6 days of RTO may be approved, excluding holidays; additional time may be added to the end of the contract if contracted hours cannot be met
- No more than 2 call-offs permitted during the 13-week contract
- Required scrub color: Navy
- Parking is available at no cost
- First-time travelers will be considered, though experienced travelers are preferred
