American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neonatal ICU position at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital, requiring at least 2 years of Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience.

Details

  • 53-bed NICU unit with an average patient census of 58, plus overflow capacity
  • High-acuity, fast-paced Level 4 NICU environment within a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital
  • Patient population includes complex neonatal respiratory (RDS, TTN, MAS, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia), cardiac (TOF, VSD, HLHS, PPHN, PDA), neurological (seizures, IVH, HIE), and GI/GU/metabolic conditions (NEC, NAS, TORCH infections, sepsis, congenital anomalies, and more)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3
  • Specialized procedures and equipment include EVDs, Camino ICP/temp monitoring, vasoactive drip titration, ART lines/CVP management, ventilator and trach management, chest tubes, CRRT, and baby-side ECMO
  • EMR: Epic (experience required)
  • Additional equipment includes Alaris and Medfusion syringe pumps, Omnicell med dispensing, Philips monitors, PIV ultrasound, Tecotherm, and MOMs breast milk scanning
  • 12-hour night shifts, 1900–0700, 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation requires 2 Fridays, 2 Mondays, and every other Saturday/Sunday within each 6-week scheduling cycle
  • Floating may be required to Neonatal PCU or, as a helping hand, to Pediatric CVICU, PICU, or general Peds — unless the candidate has prior experience in those populations
  • No on-call requirements for travelers; if the NICU cannot utilize a traveler, they may be floated to similar units as listed above

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and NRP certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
  • Must be comfortable in a high-acuity, fast-paced NICU environment
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Proficiency in critical care skills including vasoactive drip titration, invasive line management (ART lines, CVP), ventilator and trach management, CRRT, and aseptic/sterile techniques
  • Experience with EVDs, Camino device, ECMO (baby side), and HOFV management preferred; manager has shown flexibility on these specific skills
  • Candidate's permanent address must be located 50 or more miles from the facility; local candidates are not accepted
  • At least 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN required for consideration
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Unit is supported 24/7 by a charge nurse, IV/VAT/PICC team, respiratory therapy, intensivist, and centralized/bedside telemetry monitoring
  • Additional in-house support includes residents, APPs, a resource nurse, unit-based educators (AM and PM shifts), and 6 clinical supervisors
  • Orientation consists of NEO orientation plus 2 days of departmental orientation
  • Travelers are expected to work holidays as scheduled; unit requirement includes the day of the holiday and the eve and/or day after, on an every-other-holiday rotation
  • RTO requires manager approval; candidates with significant time-off needs may be required to extend their contract to accommodate
  • First-time travelers will be considered on a case-by-case basis with manager approval depending on current staffing
  • Candidates who have previously held a permanent position at an AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year before being considered
  • Scrub color is navy; long-sleeve undershirts must be solid navy or white; pediatric-friendly scrub tops are encouraged
  • "Bare Below Elbow" policy is enforced in the nursery — no watches, jewelry (permanent or plastic), or artificial nails
  • Unit culture emphasizes teamwork, trust, accountability, respect, and flexibility
