Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level I Trauma teaching hospital, requiring 2 years of Med/Tele experience and proficiency in post-op neuro and spine care.
Details
- 12-hour night shifts (1900–0700), 36 hours per week
- 36-bed Medical unit within a 874-licensed-bed Level I Trauma teaching hospital that also serves as a Chest Pain and Stroke Center
- High-acuity patient population including spinal surgery/spinal fusion, stroke, seizure, myasthenia gravis, brain tumors/lesions, and altered mental status (AMS)
- RN-to-patient ratio of 1:4–6 based on acuity; surge staffing may increase ratios to 1:7–8
- CNAs are available with varying ratios
- EMR: Epic (experience required)
- IV Pump: Alaris; Medication Dispensing: Omnicell; Vitals: Masimo (stationary) and Philips (portable)
- Nurses are responsible for reading and responding to telemetry monitors — no dedicated monitoring tech
- Every other weekend rotation required
- Floating required within assigned region and scope of practice to multiple facilities as needed; candidates who are not agreeable to floating should not apply
- No on-call requirements
Requirements
- Active NC or compact RN license currently in hand
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Telemetry RN experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- Proficiency in cardiac rhythm interpretation, stroke care, trach care, PIV starts, chest tube management, NGT placement, and drain/tube management (Dobhoff, PEG tubes, Hemovac, JP drains, flexiseals, foley insertion/management)
- Experience managing medication drips including cardiac drips, heparin, blood products, and IVF
- Comfortable with post-op neuro and spine care, including patient and family education
- Skilled in assessing and managing acute and chronic pain, including in patients with a history of substance abuse, using multiple modalities including opioid administration
- Permanent address must be located more than 50 miles from the facility; local candidates are not accepted
- At least 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
Additional Information
- Department support includes CNAs, a Receptionist/HUC, 24/7 Charge Nurse, Phlebotomy (peripheral draws only), IV/VAT Team, Resource Nurse (as available), and 24/7 RT, Hospitalist, and Intensivist coverage
- Orientation includes New Employee Orientation (NEO) plus 2 days of departmental orientation
- Scheduling is managed on a 6-week cycle
- Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
- Up to 6 days of RTO may be approved per contract, excluding holidays; additional time may be added to the end of the contract if contracted hours cannot be met
- No more than 2 call-offs are permitted during a 13-week contract
- Scrub color: Navy; parking is complimentary
- Unit culture emphasizes teamwork, positive attitude, openness to real-time feedback, and a strong focus on quality care including CAUTI, HAPI, fall, and CLABSI prevention
- Former permanent employees of any AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year before being considered
- First-time travelers are not preferred but may be considered
