Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Float Pool (Med/Surg Tele/Stepdown) position requiring at least 2 years of experience, ACLS, and the ability to float across multiple acute care units including stepdown, rehab, and ED holding.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting with floating required across Med/Surg, Stepdown (IMCU/3W), Intermediate Rehab Unit (IRU), and ED Holding
- Med/Surg units feature 28–29 private beds with a patient ratio of 1:6–7; Stepdown unit has 28 private beds with ratios of 1:4–5 (or 1:6 at Med/Surg acuity)
- Med/Surg patient population includes post-surgical, orthopedic, pneumonia, dialysis, palliative/hospice, end-of-life, and low-volume inpatient chemo patients
- Stepdown patient population is heavily cardiac, including dysrhythmias, CVAs, ICU downgrades, and a mix of complex cases
- Med/Surg units may have remote telemetry patients monitored by a dedicated monitor tech; nurses are not required to read strips on Med/Surg
- Stepdown RNs must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips; the unit serves as the central monitor station for the entire hospital
- Drips on Med/Surg include Heparin and MSO4 for comfort measures; no cardiac drips
- Stepdown drips include Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Heparin, and set-rate insulin; no sedation drips
- Respiratory support includes BiPAP, CPAP, and High Flow on both units, managed by RT (available in-house 24/7)
- Pharmacy and hospitalist coverage available in-house 24/7 on Stepdown; Intensivist in ICU 7 days/week 7a–7p with on-call after hours
- EMR: Epic
- Schedule: 3x12-hour night shifts per week (7p–7:30a) with rotating weekends and holidays
- Every-other-weekend requirement; Stepdown nights require Friday/Saturday/Sunday rotation
- Med/Surg nurses are also required to work 2 Fridays per schedule period
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active PA RN license or Compact RN license required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Stepdown experience required, with comfort managing cardiac drips and interpreting telemetry strips
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- Must be comfortable caring for both infectious (COVID) and non-infectious patients simultaneously on Med/Surg
- Must be able to titrate vasoactive and cardiac drips
- 2 references required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference (from a permanent position within the last 12 months if applicable) and 1 peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN)
- Copies of certifications and driver's license required for consideration
- Skills checklist completed within the past year required for consideration
- Work history covering the past 7 years (or since graduation, whichever is less) with no gaps greater than 30 days required for consideration
Additional Information
- Float Pool RNs rotate between Med/Surg, Stepdown, IRU (Rehab), and ED Holding as needed
- Med/Surg orientation includes 1 shift with a preceptor; Stepdown orientation includes 2 shifts with a preceptor
- No CNA support on Med/Surg nights; Stepdown has no CNA coverage after 11p
- Stepdown may require floating to the ICU in a helping-hands capacity
- Stepdown director is known for excellent communication, flexible block scheduling, and traveler-friendly management
- Navy blue scrubs required; any jacket worn must also be navy blue
- Holidays are worked on a rotating basis integrated with permanent staff schedules
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from this WVU facility to be eligible for this travel position
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before reapplying
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than 1 cumulative year without taking a 2-year break
- Candidates may only be submitted to one WVU facility at a time
