Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Visual Monitor Unit (VMU) telemetry position at a Level I Trauma facility, requiring MedSurg/Tele experience and the ability to pass a dysrhythmia exam prior to placement.

- Visual Monitor Unit (VMU) is a Med/Surg telemetry unit serving inpatients who may have a secondary behavioral health component requiring additional safety monitoring
- Common patient population includes those with medical diagnoses and secondary psychiatric conditions such as confusion, dementia, and low cognitive ability
- 14-bed unit with a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Average patient length of stay is approximately 4 days
- Charting is done via Cerner EMR
- 12-hour night shifts (7pm–7am)
- 4 weekend shifts required per 4-week period (approximately every 3rd weekend)
- Holiday coverage follows the permanent staff rotation
- 2-shift floor-specific orientation provided
- Floating may be required to ED psych holds or MedSurg floors
- Charge nurse carries a patient assignment
- Support staff includes behavioral health techs and security personnel who monitor patients via video
- SWAT RN available for IV support; RT and Pharmacy available 24/7
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active AZ RN license or Compact (NLC) license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- MedSurg/Telemetry experience required
- Level I Trauma experience required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
- Must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam (basic or advanced) prior to offer confirmation — two attempts allowed
- Psychiatric nursing experience preferred but not required
- Cerner EMR experience preferred
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, each including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Valid driver's license required for consideration
Additional Information
- Nurses provide telemetry monitoring and med/surg care to patients with co-occurring behavioral health diagnoses; psychiatric experience is a plus but not a primary requirement
- All patients are video monitored by on-unit security; chemical restraints are used; physical restraints are rare
- Psych MD is present on the unit
- A pass/fail SIMs Lab assessment on sterile technique for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes is conducted on Day 1 of orientation — nurses who fail twice are ineligible for placement at CommonSpirit facilities in AZ and the Sacramento, CA region for 6 months
- Orientation also includes educational modules on lifts, restraints, and wound care
- Candidates must wear navy scrubs and will be issued a panic button
- Natural hair color required; facial piercings are not permitted; male nurses must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Candidates must have their own personal vehicle
- Candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the facility (driver's license used to verify permanent address)
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
