Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level 3/4 Neonatal ICU position at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital, requiring a minimum of 2 years of high-acuity NICU experience and an active NC or compact RN license.

- 53-bed NICU unit with an average patient census of 58, plus overflow capacity, located within a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital
- High-acuity neonatal patient population with complex respiratory, cardiac, neurological, GI/GU, and multisystem diagnoses including RDS, congenital heart defects, HIE, NEC, NAS, sepsis, and TORCH infections
- Nurse-to-patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3
- Specialized procedures and equipment include ventilator and trach management, ECMO (baby side), CRRT, EVDs, Camino ICP monitoring, ART lines, CVP, chest tubes, epidurals, PCAs, vasoactive drip titration, HOFV management, and g-tube/j-tube management
- EMR: Epic (experience required); IV pumps: Alaris and Medfusion syringe pumps; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Philips; PIV ultrasound and Tecotherm also in use
- 12-hour night shifts, 1900–0700, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation requires 2 Fridays, 2 Mondays, and every other Saturday/Sunday within each 6-week scheduling cycle
- Floating may be required to Neonatal PCU or as a helping hand to Pediatric CVICU, PICU, or general Peds units; travelers with prior experience in those populations may float more actively
- No on-call requirements for travelers; if the NICU cannot utilize a traveler, they may be floated to similar units
Requirements
- Active NC or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and NRP certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- Must be comfortable working in a high-acuity, fast-paced NICU environment
- Epic EMR experience required
- Experience with vasoactive drip management, invasive line management (ART lines, CVP), ventilator/trach care, and CRRT required; experience with EVDs, ICP monitoring, and ECMO preferred but flexibility has been shown
- At least 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
- Must have a permanent address at least 50 miles from the facility (local candidates not accepted)
Additional Information
- Provides high-acuity neonatal nursing care including bedside procedures, sedation/analgesic drip management, sterile technique, and family-centered discharge planning
- Robust departmental support includes a charge nurse, resource nurse, unit secretary, IV/VAT/PICC team, RT, intensivist, residents, APPs, unit-based educators, and clinical supervisors — all available 24/7 or in-house
- Orientation consists of NEO training plus 2 days of departmental orientation
- Scheduling is based on unit needs and completed on a 6-week cycle; the Clinical Supervisor provides dates of need after the core team schedule is finalized
- Travelers are expected to work holidays as scheduled; unit requirement includes working the day of, and the eve and/or day after, every other holiday during the contract
- RTO requires manager approval; candidates with significant time-off needs may be asked to extend their contract to accommodate
- Scrub color: solid navy; long-sleeve underlayers must be solid navy or white; pediatric-friendly scrub tops encouraged; no tight scrubs or other organizational branded attire
- 'Bare Below Elbow' policy in effect: no watches, jewelry (rings, bracelets), or artificial nails permitted
- Candidates who have worked a permanent position at an AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year before being considered
- First-time travelers may be considered with manager approval, depending on current staffing levels
