Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Staff Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring a minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and an AL or compact RN license.
Details
- Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within the hospital, with a home unit assigned on the first day of orientation
- Potential unit assignments include: Trauma Surgical (6 North), Neuroscience (5 South), Med/Surg Oncology (5 North), Clinical Decision Unit (4 South), Orthopedics (3 South), and MS/Ortho/Urology (3 North)
- Patient populations vary by unit and may include general surgery, vascular, neurological (CVA, TBI, seizures, craniotomy, spinal fusion), oncology, palliative care, general Med/Surg (COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure), orthopedic/spine, and urology/ENT cases
- Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
- Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- EMR: Cerner (preferred)
- Equipment includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call requirements
- Floating is required to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds)
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
- Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner required if experience is strictly ICU
- Trauma/surgical experience of at least 1 year required for Trauma Surgical unit eligibility
- Clinical skills required vary by unit and may include: wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy/colostomy care, wound vacs, PCA pumps, CVL dressing changes, pressure ulcer management, and restraint use
- Chemo administration certification highly preferred for Med/Surg Oncology unit
- Telemetry strip interpretation experience is a plus and should be included when applicable
- Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- A reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months is required for consideration
- DOB (day and month) and full SSN are required for consideration
- Copies of certifications are required for consideration
Additional Information
- Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with 492 beds, Level III NICU on site
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for VS, ADLs, and glucose checks), HUC/Receptionist, Charge Nurse, Phlebotomy, IV/VAT Team, and Hospitalist
- New travelers to the facility receive 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on-unit orientation; rehire orientation is determined based on last date worked
- Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling; Smart Square is used for scheduling
- Holiday coverage requires one major and one minor seasonal holiday per facility policy
- Candidates who have previously worked at the facility as permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being eligible to return as a traveler
- Scrubs of any color are permitted
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
