Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Emergency Department assignment at a community hospital in Artesia, NM, requiring 5 years of ED experience and a robust certification package including TNCC and NRP.
Details
- Acute care community hospital ED currently pursuing Level IV Trauma designation; STEMIs and strokes are transferred out
- Small but capable ED with 5 beds and 2 trauma bays, averaging 40–50 patients per day
- Patient population ranges from minor injuries to major traumas, including crush injuries, burns, and amputations common to a nearby oil field region
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3
- No fast track; a separate walk-in family practice clinic is attached to the hospital for lower-acuity patients
- Dedicated triage area with 1 triage nurse and 2 triage rooms
- One ED physician on site 24/7; House Supervisor available in-house 24/7
- ED Techs (CNAs) on staff handling secretary duties, vital signs, ADLs, and I&Os
- RT assigned to the ED during day shift; at night, RT covers the whole hospital — RNs are expected to manage respiratory equipment, treatments, and 12-lead EKGs
- RNs are required to read and interpret telemetry and EKGs independently
- X-ray and CT available 24/7; ultrasound, interventional, and MRI also available; portables available with RN transport assistance
- Phlebotomy available; RNs may draw labs when needed
- 12-hour day shifts (7a–7p), every other weekend required
- No floating or on-call requirements
- May be included in holiday rotation

Requirements
- Active NM or Compact RN license required
- Minimum 5 years of ED experience required; trauma Level I or II ED experience accepted
- Required certifications: BLS (AHA), ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC, NRP, and NIHSS
- Must be proficient in mixing and titrating critical drips (e.g., Amiodarone, Cardizem, Epinephrine, Insulin)
- Must demonstrate strong critical thinking skills and ability to work independently
- BSN not required
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Travelers are not asked to take on charge nurse responsibilities
- Schedule flexibility is expected — manager will consider preferred scheduling but travelers are asked to help fill gaps in the permanent staff schedule
- Scrub color: Navy Blue; jackets allowed but must be hoodless
- Unit orientation: 1–2 days with a preceptor depending on individual needs
- Online modules must be completed prior to working the floor; modules take approximately 20 hours and are assigned before the start of the contract
- Despite being a small community hospital, the facility offers a broader range of capabilities than typical for its size
