Description
American Traveler is hiring a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring 1 year of nursing experience and an active SD or compact RN license.
Details
- Work in the Ortho Neuro Surgical (ONS) unit, a 64-bed unit spread across 2 floors
- Mixed acuity unit including Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and MedSurg patients
- Patient population includes pre/post-surgical, CVA, seizures, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure (with or without hemodialysis), hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injuries, minor fractures, and DVTs
- Perform medication administration, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feeding, and blood product transfusions
- Manage peripheral IV, midline, PICC, and central line access, chest tubes, NG tubes, drains, and urinary/fecal collection devices
- Provide wound care and monitor telemetry patients
- Post neuro-intervention patient experience preferred, with education and resources provided if needed
- RN to patient ratio of 1:4, including MedSurg assignments; CNA ratio of 1:8
- Pod structure with 8 patients per pod, staffed by 2 RNs and 1 Nurse Aide
- 12-hour day shifts on a 6-week scheduling rotation
- Weekend rotation of up to 4 out of 6 weekends, including Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
- No mandatory on-call requirement, though extra on-call shifts may be available
- Floating required to any adult inpatient unit including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, and Observation in rotation with other travelers
- Uses Epic (strongly preferred), Alaris, and Omnicell charting/equipment systems
Requirements
- Active RN license (SD or Compact) required
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Completion of an approved nursing education program required
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required
- First-time travelers accepted if they have more than 1 year of experience and Epic experience
- Comfortability with MedSurg assignments required
- Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patient populations, cardiac strip interpretation, wound care, line management, drain/tube management, and drip titration required
- Experience titrating medications such as Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Levophed required; training provided for less common drips like Esmolol or other Betablockers/antihypertensives
Additional Information
- Unit support includes two dedicated charge nurses (one per floor) who do not carry a patient load, a Flex Nurse staffed daily from 10a-10p, a Resource/Nurse Clinician during dayshift, phlebotomy services, respiratory therapy, and hospitalist support
- No dedicated IV/VAT team
- Orientation includes 2 days of unit/department orientation with policies, protocols, and classroom training, plus 2 orientation shifts with a preceptor
- Holiday RTO requests are not being accepted at this time
- Up to 1.5 weeks of time off may be approved, requiring contract extension to complete a full 13-week assignment
- Blackout dates apply from approximately August 1-18th due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, during which no time off is approved
- Travelers must live 100 miles away from any Monument Health facility, and local candidates are not accepted
- Permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler
- This is considered a highly traveler-friendly facility with a strong track record of renewing travelers
