Description

American Traveler is seeking a Med/Surg RN for a float pool position requiring an active AL or compact RN license and at least 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience.

Details

  • Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center hospital setting with 492 beds
  • Staff float pool assignment across multiple MedSurg and specialty units including Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
  • Patient ratios typically 1:4-6 depending on unit, with expectation of high-quality care including turning patients and assisting with ADLs
  • 12-hour day or night shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a), 36 hours per week on a 4-week self-scheduling cycle via Smart Square
  • Weekend rotation required (every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month)
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to similar units (MedSurg-to-MedSurg, MedSurg-to-ICU tasking, MedSurg-to-ER/holds, or ICU equivalents)
  • EMR used is Cerner, with Epic experience also considered
  • IV pumps are Plum 360, medication dispensing via Omnicell, and monitors are Spacelabs
  • Telemetry monitored by dedicated techs, but RNs must interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or multistate compact license required
  • BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience required
  • Cerner or Epic EMR experience required; Cerner experience specifically required if experience is strictly ICU-based
  • Trauma or surgical unit experience preferred depending on assigned unit, including skills such as wound care, chest tubes, NGT, PEG, ostomy care, trach care, and IV starts
  • Telemetry experience is a plus and should be highlighted if applicable

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
  • Travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ years receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours on the unit
  • Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though specific days off are not guaranteed prior to arrival
  • Facility has blackout dates throughout the year during which time off requests will not be approved without special authorization
  • Up to 7 days of RTO can be pre-approved excluding blackout dates
  • Any scrub color permitted
  • Free parking available in the designated parking deck (levels 2-4)
  • Support staff on units may include CNAs, HUCs, charge nurses, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalists depending on unit
  • Former staff members must wait 6 months from their last shift before returning as a traveler
  • Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible for this position
