Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a Level I Trauma Center float pool position requiring an active AL or compact RN license and at least 18 months of MedSurg or ICU experience.

Details

  • Float pool position within a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
  • Assigned to a home unit on the first day of orientation, which may include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Orthopedics, or MS/Ortho/Urology units
  • Patient ratios typically range from 1:4 to 1:6 depending on unit
  • Shifts are 12-hour days, 7a-7p or 7p-7a, totaling 36 hours per week
  • Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling, using Smart Square
  • Weekend rotation required, either every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to like units or for tasking, including MS-MS, MS-ICU tasking, MS-ER/MS holds, ICU-ICU, ICU-MS tasking (limit of 3), and ICU-ER/ICU holds
  • EMR is Cerner, with EPIC experience considered
  • Uses Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry is monitored by techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours

Requirements

  • Active RN license (AL or Compact) required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months experience in MedSurg and/or ICU required
  • EPIC or Cerner experience required; Cerner experience specifically required if experience is strictly ICU
  • Trauma or surgical experience preferred for surgical units, including wound care, chest tubes, NGT, and IV skills
  • Skills may include trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy care, central line blood draws, PCA pump management, and wound vac care depending on unit assignment
  • Chemo administration certification preferred for oncology-related assignments
  • One reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration
  • Copy of certifications required for consideration
  • Date of birth (day and month) required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include direct patient care such as turning patients, assisting with baths and ADLs, medication administration, and documentation
  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:10-12 ratio), charge nurses, HUC/receptionists, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalists
  • Travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ years will receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours on the unit
  • Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though specific dates are not guaranteed off prior to arrival
  • Approval for time off requests of up to 7 days can be granted, excluding facility blackout dates
  • Blackout dates for RTO include major holidays and events throughout 2026, such as MLK Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and the Christmas/New Year period, as well as the entire month of March
  • Scrubs of any color are permitted
  • Free parking available in the deck, levels 2 through 4
  • Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible, as local candidates are not accepted
  • First-time travelers will be considered for this role
  • Former staff members must wait 6 months from their last shift worked before returning as a traveler
