Description

American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry unit requiring IL licensure, 1+ year of surgical nursing experience, and EPIC EMR proficiency.

Details

  • Inpatient Surgical unit on the 3rd floor with 48 beds across two buildings
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4-6 on nights, with LPNs and virtual admission/discharge nurses available for support
  • Primary care nursing model frequently used
  • Night shift schedule with 3, 12-hour shifts starting at 7pm
  • Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday for both shifts)
  • Holiday rotation required alongside core staff
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Float to like units only; if floated to a higher acuity unit, would serve as a help-all without taking a patient load
  • Uses EPIC EMR, with a conversion occurring in Q2 2026
  • Patient population includes neuro (laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI), general surgery (ostomies, hernia repair), joint replacements (total hips/knees), vascular (fem-pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions), amputations (BKA/AKA), and diabetes management
  • Common treatments include PICC lines, TPN/Lipids, PCA pumps, epidurals, IV antibiotics, and chronic pain management with narcotics
  • Manages urgent OR cases and sepsis patients
  • Tele monitor tech available to monitor patients; RNs responsible for interpreting their own strips
  • Draeger brand telemetry monitors used
  • Nurse aides available on the unit, though they may be pulled for sitter duties; night shift has greater CNA needs
  • Respiratory therapy manages CPAP, Airvo, and occasional BiPap equipment

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required
  • BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 1 year of surgical nursing experience required
  • Total joint replacement experience required
  • Understanding of PCA pumps, reversal drugs (Narcan), and sepsis management required
  • Experience with TPN/Lipids and narcotic administration required
  • EPIC EMR experience required
  • Must be comfortable titrating Heparin and other drips per protocol

Additional Information

  • Fast-paced unit with heavy patient acuity, averaging 8-12 surgical admissions per day alongside discharges
  • Charge nurse role typically filled by Blessing staff on day shift; house supervisor may fill this role on nights and takes a smaller assignment to assist the team
  • Schedules are released 6 weeks in advance; self-scheduling and block scheduling are not guaranteed
  • Unit and department-specific orientation includes one 12-hour shift on the hired shift and unit; first day may run 12-14 hours to complete competencies, computer modules, and general orientation
  • Black scrubs required
  • 4 hours of billable computer modules must be completed prior to start, delivered the week before start date
  • Accepts local candidates

Pros

Savannah was truly perfect. Knowledgeable, responsive, caring, informative, and honest. I didn’t feel like I was apart of a sales scheme. She truly put me at ease during the process. I felt like she had my back and would work to find me what I was looking for. I look forward to working with American Traveler in the future.

Quincy, IL

About

Quincy is steeped in a rich history, revealed in its more than 3,600 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The magnificent East End downtown is where movers and shakers lived during the 19th century, while the architecture in the South Side German Historic District sports an evident German influence. Perched atop bluffs along the Mississippi River in western Illinois, only the water separated it from the former slave state of Missouri on the other side. In the 1830s, Quincy was an essential link in the Underground Railroad and a pivotal city on the issue of slavery. Learn more at the History Museum on the Square, set within a Romanesque-Revival-style building that once served as the Quincy Public Library. At the riverfront Clat Adams Bicentennial Park, locals and visitors enjoy a series of outdoor concerts and 4th of July fireworks each summer.
