Position Summary:
Reporting to the Emergency Director of Patient Care Services/Shift Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and providing high quality, individualized patient care using the components of the nursing process
Position Accountabilities
1. Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan.
2. Ensures patient safety by assessing and proactively implementing safety measures with specific consideration of patient’s functional and developmental age.
3. Provides appropriate nursing interventions. Competent in all routine nursing skills, including: (1) medication administration, (2) intravenous therapy, (3) management of indwelling catheters and drains, and (4) safe use of any medical equipment.
4. Functions in the capacity of Charge Nurse per unit Charge Nurse guidelines, when assigned. Ensures that the operations and nursing care follow Medical Center and department policies and standards. Keeps Manager/ Director informed when difficulties and/or unusual situations occur. Provides for allotted meal and break periods for staff.
5. Demonstrates the ability to provide care in emergency situations and follows established emergency procedures.
6. Delegates patient care tasks to ancillary personnel based on individual competency and scope of practice. Evaluates effectiveness of care performed.
7. Participates in activities within the organization that support performance improvement.
8. Demonstrates the ability to organize workload, set priorities, and use time efficiently to complete work on time and in an organized manner.
9. Performs physical and psychosocial assessment of all age groups of patients that demonstrates knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences. Modifies nursing care to meet the age specific requirements of the newborn (0 to 30 days), infant (31 days to 1 year), pediatric (1 to 12 years), adolescent (13 to 17 years), adult (18 to 70 years), and geriatric (71+ years) patients. Knowledge and understanding of differences in care including, but not limited to: growth and development, medications, and special physical and psychosocial needs. Modifies nursing care as appropriate.
10. Additional responsibilities are outlined on the Clinical Ladder and are to be documented on the Annual Evaluation Checklist.
11. Demonstrates strict adherence to COBRA/EMTALA requirements.
12. Demonstrates, through practice, understanding of job description and functions only within scope of practice. Limits verbal orders to emergency situations and assures inclusion of all verbal orders on the final medical record.
13. Participates in orientating and precepting of new staff, students, etc. as requested.
14. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for departmental process improvement initiatives by utilizing appropriate communication channels (i.e. through director and/or committee representatives) and implementing committee-approved changes. Provides constructive recommendations for process improvement.
15. Demonstrates responsible role in noise reduction efforts in the department and assists in maintaining traffic control.
16. Applicable to ED Admit Nurse only:
• TNCC not required
Locate all admit holds in the ED
• Document home medications
• Initiate Power Plans
• Document entire Admission History Form
• Document Bingo Card
• Begin admission interventions to include regulatory requirements
• Document Admission Assessment and administer medications on holds past 4 hours.
• Discharge admitted patient if discharged from the ED- Complete the entire depart process
• Completes medication reconciliation Full-time designated Admit Nurse must maintain current Medical Surgical or ED clinical ladder requirements"
17. All other duties as assigned.
