Description
Unit Information
The Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit specializes in the care of patients undergoing cardiovascular and vascular surgeries.
Primary Patient Population
- Cardiac surgery including CABG, AVR, MVR, Bentall, and TAVR
- Thoracic lung surgeries such as lobectomy and thoracotomy
- Esophagogastrectomy and aneurysm repairs (open and endovascular)
- Vascular surgeries including fem-pop bypass and carotid endarterectomies
- Overflow medical cardiology patients with conditions such as heart failure, DKA, chest pain, sepsis, and heart block
Unit Statistics
- Number of Beds: 40 cardiac surgery stepdown beds
- Number of Staff: Approximately 100 total
- Staffing Model:
- Day Shift: 1 Charge RN, 13 RNs, 4 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs), 1.33 Health Unit Coordinators (HUCs)
- Night Shift: 1 Charge RN, 13 RNs, 4 PCTs, 0.33 HUCs
- Patient Ratios: 1:5 patients per RN, 1:13 for PCTs

- CADD epidural pumps
- Various lifts

Qualifications
Required Skills
- Stepdown experience
- Telemetry experience
Preferred Skills
- Prior experience with cardiovascular and vascular surgery patients
- Experience in CVICU
Typical Procedures Performed on the Unit
- Epidural management
- Chest tube management
- Tube feedings
- IV glucocommander administration
- Cardiac medication management (e.g., phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, ketamine)

Floating Areas
May require floating to any stepdown or medical-surgical units.
Dress Code
All staff are required to wear navy scrubs or white tops with navy bottoms.
Additional Information
- Weekend Requirements: Minimum of 6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) within a 6-week schedule period
- Flexibility to work during holidays is required
