Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse
Location: Folsom, California
Specialty: Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Requirements
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience
- Must have at least 1 year of LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience; 3 years preferred
- Candidates with only postpartum experience will not be accepted
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
Certifications:
- Active California RN License
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- AWHONN (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Advanced Fetal Monitoring
Skills:
- Comfortable with Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) at delivery; no in-house pediatric coverage
- Ability to titrate drips (e.g., Pitocin, occasional insulin)
- Experience with OR circulating preferred if only L&D experience
Unit Details
- Family Birthing Center with:
- 2 OB delivery beds
- 7 LDRP beds
- 4-8 Overflow postpartum beds
- 1 OR suite for C-sections
- NICU with 2 beds for newborn stabilization
- Approximately 70-80 births per month
- Antepartum NST testing averaging 60-70 per month
- Patient population includes pregnancies 35 weeks and above; preterm (<35 weeks) transferred to higher level of care
- May include twin deliveries
Staffing and Work Environment
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Labor: 1:2, 1:1 at delivery
- Mother/Baby couplets: 1:4
- Charge nurse or Nurse Shift Manager on every shift (preferably not assigned a patient, but may be required)
- No CNAs; one OB Tech scheduled each shift
- OB physician in-house 24/7
- Perinatal specialist available to improve neonatal outcomes
- Anesthesia on-call with 20-minute response time; in-house if epidural present
- Respiratory Therapist attends every delivery and manages respiratory equipment (ventilator, CPAP, bubble CPAP)
- No Tele/Monitor Techs on unit; nurses monitor fetal heart rhythms using GE fetal monitors and Fetalink EFM system
- Patients receiving general anesthesia are recovered in the Main PACU
Scheduling and Other Requirements
- 12-hour shifts, days and nights (Friday/Saturday nights, Saturday/Sunday days)
- Weekend requirement: 2 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
- Holiday rotation with core staff
- May be placed on-call/standby during scheduled shifts; must respond within 30 minutes
- Floating required to other Sacramento facilities
- Scheduling done 4 weeks in advance
- Candidates must not have been employed by any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity) within the last 12 months
Additional Notes
- Candidates must confirm ability to "catch the baby" before submitting
- Follow AWHONN guidelines for staffing ratios (though this facility does not strictly follow them)
