    Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse

    Location: Sacramento, California
    Specialty: Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, Obstetrics)
    Contract Length: 13 weeks


    Job Description

    Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a high-risk Family Birthing Center. Candidates must be comfortable managing all aspects of labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum care (LDRP), including circulating during C-sections and providing couplet care.


    Requirements

    • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience
    • Active California RN license
    • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), AWHONN-Advanced (STABLE preferred)
    • Ability to float to Maternal Baby (MB) unit
    • Must be able to circulate C-sections
    • Must be able to titrate drips (e.g., Pitocin)
    • Must be able to read and interpret EKG strips on postpartum moms in PACU
    • Candidates cannot have been employed by any CommonSpirit-associated facility (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year, except PRN through outside firms

    Unit Details

    • Unit Type: Family Birthing Center - OB / L&D / Postpartum (LDRP)
    • Beds: 10 Labor & Delivery beds, 12 Postpartum beds
    • Operating Rooms: 2 OR suites on unit for C-sections
    • Triage Beds: 3 OB-ED beds and 3 antepartum testing beds (used for OB ED overflow)
    • Birth Volume: Approximately 100-150 births per month
    • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
      • Couplets: 1:3-4
      • Labor & Delivery: 1:1 to 1:2
      • Antepartum: 1:1-3

    Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

    • Preterm labor
    • Bleeding
    • Inductions
    • Cesarean sections
    • Hypertension

    Staffing & Support

    • Charge Nurse/House Supervisor available (generally does not take patients)
    • OB surgical techs on unit
    • OB hospitalist available 24/7
    • Neonatologist on call 24/7, rounds daily
    • Anesthesia in-house 24/7
    • No respiratory therapists or ventilators on unit
    • Tele/Monitor techs present; RNs must interpret EKG strips in PACU

    Equipment & Monitoring

    • Fetal monitoring system: GE Corometric monitors with Fetalink surveillance

    Scheduling & Shifts

    • 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM
    • Report at bedside
    • Overtime and extra shifts available
    • Every other weekend (EOW) and holiday rotation with staff
    • On-call response time: 30 minutes
    • Floating: May float to other Sacramento facilities; mid-shift float is rare; no in-house floating

    Additional Information

    • Scrubs provided
    • "Baby Catcher" role (NRP role) assigned for entire shift; may be filled by L&D or NICU staff depending on availability
    • High-risk unit requiring full scope of LDRP skills and flexibility

    This position is ideal for nurses experienced in high-acuity labor and delivery settings who are comfortable managing complex OB cases and working in a fast-paced, supportive environment.
