Description

Job Opportunity: Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring Nurse (6N)

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro Acute 6NNA/B
Unit Size: 48 beds total (including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
Hospital Size: 607 beds
Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma
EMR System: Cerner (required)


Contract Details

  • Length: 13 weeks minimum (facility will not consider contracts shorter than 13 weeks)
  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
  • Weekend Requirement: 3 shifts every 4 weeks (self-scheduling)
  • Holidays: Work included in holiday rotation based on unit needs
  • Orientation: 2 shifts of floor-specific orientation required
  • Floating: Possible float to Med Surg/Telemetry floors

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years of core experience in specialty (Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring or related Med Surg/Telemetry)
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Previous travel experience required for ED or Neuro ICU
  • ACLS and BLS certifications required
  • BSN preferred; Med Surg/Telemetry certification preferred
  • Cerner EMR experience required for ED
  • Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
  • Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes)
  • Strong critical thinking and assessment skills required, including ability to detect subtle patient changes and assess cranial nerves

Unit & Patient Care Details

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 (days and nights)
  • Charge Nurse present (no patient assignment)
  • Resource RN available day and night
  • Nurse aides (PCTs): 1-2 on days, 1 at night
  • Telemetry: Mainly Med Surg with some Telemetry required
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7; manages Bipap and vents
  • IV Team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV sticks
  • Hospitalist or Intensivist present during day shifts
  • Pharmacy available 24/7
  • Common patient diagnoses: Epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury (TBI), various neuro diagnoses
  • Use of self-releasing Velcro seat belts (not restraints)

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Must have natural hair color; no facial piercings allowed
  • Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • Cannot hold two contracts simultaneously within this system
  • Must have been away from CommonSpirit as permanent staff for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
  • Weekly orientations held on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
  • Parking assigned with shuttle service to facility (night shift parking in garage)
  • Teaching hospital environment; nurses may work with nursing students
  • 50-mile radius rule applies (driver’s license is source of truth)

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Onboarding documents must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start
  • Day 1 SIMs Lab is pass/fail; includes Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (exceptions for some units)
  • Additional education on lifts, restraints, and wound care provided (non-evaluative)

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Acute nurses with strong critical thinking skills who are comfortable in a fast-paced, teaching hospital environment with a focus on epilepsy monitoring and neuro critical care.
