ER Nurse Shift Manager - Travel Contract
Location: Bakersfield, California
Specialty: Emergency Room (ER)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced ER nurse for a travel contract as a Nurse Shift Manager (NSM). The NSM will provide direct patient care when necessary and manage the department, including fulfilling Charge Nurse duties. This role requires strong Charge RN or management experience.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 full years of ER nursing experience
- Active California nursing license
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS
- Strong Charge RN or management experience
Responsibilities
- Manage the ER department and act as Charge Nurse when needed
- Provide direct patient care including triaging ambulance patients, starting IVs, administering medications
- Support wherever needed within the department
- Handle typical ER patients and occasional MedSurg Tele holds in the ER
- Participate in teamwork-oriented environment
Work Environment & Details
- ER beds: 21 (Fast track staffed with midlevels & LVNs)
- Nurse to patient ratio: 1:4 (1:2 if ICU patient)
- EMR system: Cerner
- Charge Nurse roles shared between Shift Manager and Resource Nurse
- Nurse aides: ED Techs (EMT or aides from other units)
- Telemetry: Phillips system
- Ventilators available
- Hospitalist or Intensivist in-house; only MDs used in ER
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
- Pharmacy available 24/7 with Omnicell system
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts, self-scheduling with manager approval, 4-week schedules, no block scheduling
- Floating: Possible between two facilities 6.5 miles apart, with 2-hour notice before shift; mid-shift floating possible
- Call: If on standby, must report within 30 minutes
- Orientation: 2 shifts at primary campus, 1 shift at secondary campus
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule (Fri/Sat nights, Sat/Sun days)
- Holidays: 1 major and 1 minor holiday required
- Scrub color: Navy blue (including jackets and undershirts which can be navy, white, or black)
Additional Notes
- Facility is a Primary Stroke Center
- Rarely holds psychiatric patients ("5150 psych holds") longer than 12 hours
- Utilizes a Mobile Evaluation Team (MET)
- Patient volume can vary significantly (e.g., 115 to 175 patients per day)
- This position is the primary job; no accommodation for other work schedules
- Must be highly teamwork oriented
- Night shifts, every other weekend (EOW), and first to float
This position is ideal for ER nurses with leadership experience looking for a challenging and dynamic travel assignment in California.
