Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Pediatric Psychiatric Facility
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Facility & Unit Overview
- Pediatric Psychiatric Hospital with 46 staffed beds
- Magnet designated facility
- Four patient units staffed with 1 RN per unit and Behavioral Health Techs
- Patient ratios: 1:12 (days, nights, weekends)
- Charting system: EPIC
- Scrub colors: RNs – navy blue; Techs – pewter gray
- Free parking available
Shift Details
- 3 shifts per 13 weeks
- Night shifts only: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, 3 x 12-hour shifts
- Weekend requirement: Every Sunday night shift OR every Friday night shift OR every other Friday night shift
- No on-call required
- No floating outside scope of practice
- No block schedule accommodation
- Local candidates not accepted (must live at least 75 miles away)
- No pending license accepted
- Return to office restrictions: No more than 7 days
Experience & Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of Registered Nurse experience required
- Patient ratio experience: 1:12 required
- First-time travelers accepted
- Prior travel experience: Not required
Certifications & Training Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- MANDT patient restraint certification (provided onsite if not currently certified)
- Trauma Informed Care Training (provided onsite)
- Zero Suicide Training (provided onsite)
- Missouri Children's Division Background Check required
- Pediatric Pharmacology Competency Exam required
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam required
- Other preferred certifications (depending on unit): ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI/MAB, NIH Stroke Certification, EFM, IV Certification (if applicable)
Skills & Competencies Preferred
- Experience in treatment settings: Child/Adolescents, Eating Disorders, Forensic, Geriatric, Inpatient, Locked Unit, Medical/Psych, Outpatient, Residential/Group Home, Substance Use/Chemical Dependency
- Care of patients with: Anxiety, Bipolar, Depressive, Eating, Personality, Psychotic, Schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, PTSD, Substance use, Suicidal behavior, Trauma-related disorders, Severe intellectual disabilities, Assault/violence, Congenital/Developmental, Degenerative disorders (Alzheimer’s, ALS, Parkinson’s)
- Emergency care skills: Cardiac arrest/CPR, emergent chemical restraints, physical hold protocols
- Legal knowledge: Use of seclusion, voluntary/involuntary commitment
- Medication administration: Oral, rectal, IM, IV, SC, etc.
- Therapeutic approaches: Behavior management, crisis intervention, de-escalation, managing assaultive behavior, psychoeducation
- Professional skills: Blood glucose monitoring, lab value interpretation, seclusion protocols
Compliance & Background Checks
- Multi-step Missouri state background check (MoVechs) required, takes minimum 3 weeks
- Criminal background check within 6 months required (7-year search including statewide, nationwide, sex offender, international if applicable)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG quarterly checks required
- Education verification required (highest nursing education)
- Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab units (not for Missouri)
- State-specific searches and abuse registry checks as applicable
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be valid throughout assignment
- Physical exam within 1 year of start required
- Fit mask testing (N95) required and must be renewed annually
- Immunizations/vaccinations required or documented immunity for: Tdap, TB (2 negative PPDs or equivalent), Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Hepatitis B declination required (not mandatory vaccination)
Facility-Specific Documents & Training
- Badge photo and facility badge required
- HIPAA Acknowledgement, Latex Allergy Questionnaire, Confidentiality Form, Regulatory Compliance Education, Hand Hygiene Policy, Fingernail Policy, Dress Code Policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start
- Orientation modules (~16 hours) required for all RNs and LVNs, completed through WorkRamp before start
- MOVECHS clearance process required for Missouri placements (minimum 3 weeks)
- Additional healthstream and Epic training modules may be required
References & History
- Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
- Employment application and unit-specific skills checklist required
- Performance evaluations may be requested but not mandatory for clearance
Additional Notes
- RNs cover 8-12 patients supporting medication passes and overall unit guidance; Behavioral Health Techs provide direct observation and documentation
- Candidates must be responsive and complete all required documentation promptly to avoid delays or cancellations
- No floating outside scope of practice
- No local candidates accepted (minimum 75 miles from facility)
