Location: Berkeley, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift Details
- Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Weekend Requirements: Every other weekend (EOW)

Job Summary
As a Registered Nurse, you will be the primary nurse responsible for managing nursing care from admission to discharge. Your role includes ensuring competent, compassionate, and cost-effective patient care, maintaining patient safety and comfort, performing disease prevention and restorative measures, and responding to medical and environmental emergencies.
Job Duties
- Provide patient care according to unit and hospital policies and nursing standards.
- Plan and coordinate care to maximize efficiency and safety.
- Prioritize and provide care in routine and complex situations.
- Serve as liaison between nursing and medical staff for collaborative care.
- Coordinate involvement of patient, physician, family, and health team members.
- Initiate and direct emergency interventions calmly and competently.
- Administer treatments, medications, and nursing skills timely.
- Monitor patient status and communicate significant changes to physicians.
- Conduct initial and ongoing patient/family assessments including biophysical, psychosocial, spiritual, environmental, self-care, educational, and discharge planning factors.
- Develop, implement, and modify individualized patient care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
Floating
- May float to other units within scope of practice.
- May float to other campuses depending on need/census with approximately 1.5 hours’ notice.
- Shuttle service provided if floating is requested.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year background check including SSN trace, county searches, sex offender search, education verification, and FACIS Level 3 screening.
- Annual updates required for EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and FACIS screenings.
- Education verification required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
- Drug screening: Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months of start (excluding marijuana due to CA law).
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Fit test for masks required annually (with accommodations for religious exemptions).
- Immunizations and health screenings required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray (annual renewal)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) immunity or vaccination
- Hepatitis B vaccination or declination
- Varicella immunity or vaccination
- Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (or approved declination)
- TB screening questionnaire within 90 days of start, renewed annually.
- Respiratory safety clearance required annually.
Competency and Certification Exams
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam may be required for some units.
Documentation and Orientation
- Must review and sign facility-specific documents including standards of business conduct, confidentiality agreements, HIPAA agreements, and orientation materials prior to start.
- Complete required vendor training and code of conduct annually as applicable.
Employment History and References
- Full 7 years of work history required on application with no gaps.
- Employment verification for up to 7 years required.
- Two professional references required for clinical positions.
