Description
Registered Nurse (RN) – Adult ICU Pods
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: SICU/MICU/Trauma ICU (40 beds per unit, 120 beds total)
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 7pm–7am)
Schedule:
- Self-scheduling with scheduler oversight to rebalance
- 3 weekend shifts every 4 weeks
- Holiday shifts as part of core staff rotation
- Orientation: 2 shifts on the floor
Unit Details & Patient Population
- MICU: Sepsis, GI bleed, DKA, RotaProne therapy, heat stroke, overdoses (most intubated, sitter required when extubated)
- SICU: Post-op vented patients, lung/liver/kidney transplants, severe back surgeries, Whipple procedures
- TICU: Trauma patients including MVAs, gunshot wounds, closed head injuries, orthopedic trauma
- Bedside procedures include bronchoscopy, tracheostomy care, hemodialysis catheter placements
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience required
- Must have experience in a 600+ bed teaching hospital
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Must be competent in Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (SIMs Lab pass/fail on Day 1)
- RNs must be able to read and interpret their own telemetry strips
- Experience with common titratable and set-rate drips
- Ability to float across all ICU areas and MedSurg/Telemetry units, including possible float to a secondary campus
Certifications & Exams
- ACLS, BLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications required
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to position acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
- Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab for sterile technique and nursing skills
- Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Must have natural hair color and no facial piercings
- Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
- Cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously within this system
- Must have been off permanent staff in this system for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
- Facility is a teaching hospital; nurses may have nursing students assigned
- Parking provided with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage
- Unit staffed with 24/7 intensivist and respiratory therapy coverage (ventilator types include Cervo I, Jets, Oscillators)
Contract Length
- Minimum contract length: 13 weeks
Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
- Experience with Cerner EMR required
Orientation & Onboarding
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
- Onboarding paperwork must be completed by Wednesday 1pm CST before start date; incomplete files delay start
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs with trauma and teaching hospital backgrounds who are comfortable with complex critical care patients and bedside procedures in a high-acuity, teaching environment.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Arizona
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including ICU experience within the last year
- One completed travel assignment
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience in a 600+ bed teaching facility
- Emergency Department (ED) experience
