Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical/Telemetry Float Pool
Location: Centennial, Colorado (Zone 1 – 60 mile radius around Colorado Springs, CO)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Job Overview
- Float pool position requiring coverage across multiple facilities within a 60-mile radius zone around Colorado Springs, CO.
- No home base facility; must be able to float to any facility within the zone.
- Facilities include hospitals and medical centers up to 46 miles from Colorado Springs city center.
- Units covered include a variety of specialties: General Medical-Surgical Telemetry, Cardiac, Neurology, Oncology, Rehabilitation, Renal, Bariatrics, Orthopedics, Trauma, Emergency Department Observation.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios typically range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on patient acuity.
- Schedules are released 4–6 weeks in advance and may be either:
- Assigned to a single facility for the week with possible floating within that facility, or
- Just-In-Time (JIT) assignments where the facility is assigned 1–2 hours before shift start.
Patient Population & Care
- Adult to geriatric patients with diagnoses including cardiac, neurological, orthopedic, oncology, renal, urology post-surgical, general surgery post-appendectomy, gynecology, psychiatric/detox, ENT, general medicine, and stable long-term placement patients.
- Nurses are required to titrate heparin drips.
- Respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, and BiPAP are used on units.
- Charge nurses are designated on each unit and typically do not take patient assignments unless necessary, more common on night shifts.
- Nurse aides are present on the units.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical Telemetry nursing experience.
- Prior neurology experience is preferred but not required.
- Current RN license valid in Colorado.
- Certifications required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – American Heart Association
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Scheduling & Work Expectations
- 12-hour night shifts.
- Approximately 6–9 weekend shifts required in each 6-week schedule.
- May be asked to participate in holiday rotation.
- Rare call or standby requirements, typically only for low census situations.
- Must be flexible to fill gaps in permanent scheduling.
- All time off requests must be submitted prior to starting the assignment.
- Orientation week requires clinicians to be physically present in-state, even if some modules are remote.
Floating & Travel Requirements
- Must float throughout the entire 60-mile zone; housing must accommodate this requirement.
- Floating may include any acuity level: ICU (low acuity holds), PCU/Stepdown, and Medical-Surgical Telemetry.
- First float assignment communicated on or before the Monday start date.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
Additional Notes
- Hiring process includes an interview with the clinical team; no unit manager involvement.
- Drivers license must be submitted due to travel requirements within the zone.
