Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – Oncology Acute Telemetry Unit

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Oncology Acute Telemetry (Tower 6)
Unit Size: 32 beds
Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum)
Shift: Days (7am–7pm)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36


Unit and Patient Care Details

  • Patient population: Approximately 85% oncology patients, 15% telemetry medical-surgical patients (surgical, medical, oncology).
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
  • Charge nurse role available with light patient assignment; serves as oncology resource RN.
  • Nurse aides: 2 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) on days and nights.
  • Weekend requirement: At least 1 weekend per month.
  • Holidays: Scheduled into rotation based on unit coverage.
  • Floating: May float to other MedSurg/Telemetry units.
  • Common equipment: Phillips telemetry system (RN interprets EKGs), Bipap and Cpap ventilators.
  • Support services: Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7; SWAT RN available for difficult IV sticks.
  • No hospitalist or intensivist in-house.

Required Certifications and Skills

  • BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Chemotherapy certification is a plus.
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance; maximum 2 attempts allowed. Failure results in 6-month disqualification in the region.
  • Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation (study guide provided).
  • SIMs Lab completion required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail). ED and Neuro ICU have slightly different SIMs Lab requirements. Competency in sterile technique is mandatory.
  • Must be competent in lifts, restraints, and wound care (educational only).

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of core nursing experience in the specialty (Oncology Telemetry).
  • Level 1 Trauma and teaching hospital experience required.
  • Prior travel experience required for Emergency Department and Neuro ICU roles (not explicitly required for this Oncology role).

Licensure

  • Must hold an active RN license valid in Arizona.

Orientation and Onboarding

  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 days on the unit.
  • Weekly orientations held on Mondays (except holiday weeks).
  • Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start.

Additional Requirements and Policies

  • No facial piercings allowed; natural hair colors only (no unnatural colors).
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing.
  • Candidates cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously with this employer.
  • Must have been off permanent staff employment with this health system for at least 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment.
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles.
  • Parking is assigned with shuttle service to the facility; night shift parking differs.
  • Candidates should include unit size, hospital size, trauma level, and Cerner EMR experience in their profiles.

Electronic Medical Record (EMR)

  • Cerner EMR experience required.

Work Environment

  • Teaching hospital with nursing students present.
  • Scrub color: Navy.
