Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Emergency Department
Location: Spooner, Wisconsin
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Hours: 12 hours per shift, approximately 24 hours per week
Weekend Requirement: Every 2nd or 3rd weekend, based on scheduling needs
Holiday Requirement: Every 3rd holiday
Scrub Color: Any color allowed
Job Description
- Work in a calm, relaxed Emergency Department with a culture of excellence.
- Trauma Level 4 ED with 4 ED rooms, 1 triage room, 2 trauma rooms, and 4 overflow rooms.
- Separate triage room available; travel nurses are allowed to triage patients.
- Patients remain in the ED until admission or transfer; boarding policy in place for delayed transfers.
- No separate psychiatric/seclusion rooms.
- Security coverage during weekdays; nights rely on panic buttons and local law enforcement.
- Average patient census: 15 to 30 patients per day.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4, may increase during high census times.
- ED staffed with 2 nurses and a physician; physician on site 24/7. Hospitalist support available during high census.
- Charge nurse assumes house supervisor duties at 11 PM but remains available for patient care if needed.
- Respiratory Therapist available weekdays on day shift; CRNA on call 24/7 for intubations and ABGs.
- RNs perform breathing treatments, EKGs, and manage bipap and Airvo devices.
- No monitor techs; RNs manage their own cardiac monitoring strips.
- X-ray and CT available on call at night; transport arranged via local ambulance services.
- Lab staff perform blood draws; RNs may draw blood when starting IVs.
- No self-scheduling; shifts assigned as needed.
- Travel staff rotate through low census and are not required to take call if cut.
- May assist with inpatient tasks but will not be assigned inpatient patients.
- Department-specific orientation: 1 day with preceptor; not expected to work alone for first few shifts.
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
Required Experience & Skills
- Experience in Emergency Department nursing preferred.
- Familiarity with managing vented patients and use of bipap and Airvo devices.
- Experience with common emergency drips including Levophed, epinephrine, nitroglycerin, heparin, diltiazem, amiodarone, dobutamine, dopamine, Lasix, insulin, potassium, magnesium, alteplase, Kcentra, propofol, Keppra, and Dilantin.
- Comfortable managing urgent care cases, childhood viruses, traumas, strokes, STEMIs, metabolic and respiratory disorders, appendicitis, GI bleeds, and bowel obstructions.
Additional Information
- Radius rule: Candidates must live outside a 50-mile radius from the facility to be eligible.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
