Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – Observation Unit

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Observation (7 HLT)
Beds: 21-23 beds
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 7pm–7am)
Schedule: 36 hours/week, 7-7 schedule released 4 weeks in advance
Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum


Unit & Patient Care Details

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 to 1:5
  • Charge nurse may take 1-3 patients when short staffed
  • 1 Patient Care Technician (PCT) per shift
  • Telemetry unit with centrally monitored cardiac strips; RNs read strips
  • Ventilation support includes CPAP at night; occasional BiPAP and High Flow managed by Respiratory Therapy (RT)
  • RT and Pharmacy available 24/7
  • Common patient diagnoses: chest pain, syncope, acute pulmonary issues, cholecystectomy, hand surgeries, fundoplications, OB/GYN post-op, trauma observation
  • High turnover rate on the unit; frequent patient admissions and discharges
  • Floating to MedSurg Tele floors and nearby campuses possible with 1-2 hour notice, including mid-shift float

Required Qualifications & Certifications

  • Active RN license for Arizona
  • Minimum 2 years of core specialty experience in Observation or MedSurg with Level 1 Trauma and teaching hospital experience
  • ACLS and BLS certifications required
  • COVID-19 vaccination required
  • Cerner EMR experience required
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required within 24-48 hours prior to position acceptance; maximum 2 attempts, passing score 80%
  • SIMs Lab competency required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (except ED and NyICU have modified requirements)
  • Must be competent in sterile field maintenance and common nursing skills such as lifts, restraints, and wound care
  • Prior travel experience required for certain specialties (ED, Neuro ICU), but not explicitly stated for this Observation role

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
  • Candidates cannot hold concurrent contracts or assignments with this employer
  • Must have been off permanent staff status with this employer for 12 months before being eligible for travel assignment
  • Must pass onboarding paperwork by deadline (1pm CST Wednesday before start) or start date will be delayed
  • Parking provided with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage
  • Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week period
  • Holidays worked on a rotating basis
  • Scrub color: Navy
  • RNs are required to titrate drips including Diltiazem, Heparin, and Amiodarone
  • Staff may be placed on standby with at least 1.5 hours notice and must report within 1 hour if called in

Orientation & Training

  • 2-day floor-specific orientation
  • SIMs Lab is pass/fail; failure may result in termination
  • Day 1 pass/fail exam required (details provided separately)

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with strong MedSurg and Observation skills, comfortable working in a fast-paced, teaching hospital environment with trauma-level patients and telemetry monitoring.
