Description
Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Davis, California
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36
Unit Overview
- Approximately 1450 births per year
- Large midwifery practice with water labor and water births
- Use of birth slings, intermittent fetal monitoring, epidurals, and circulating during Cesarean sections
- Baby Friendly designation
- Emphasis on supporting physiologic birth with low Cesarean section and epidural rates
- Couplet care model and level 1 nursery (stabilize and/or transfer)
- Block scheduling available if staffing allows
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year
- Postpartum nursing experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification
Background and Screening Requirements
- 7-year background check including SSN trace with all aliases, county searches, nationwide sex offender search, education verification, and FACIS Level 3 screening (within 2 weeks of start and monthly thereafter)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks, updated annually
- Drug screening: Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids per California law)
- Employment history verification covering 7 years with no gaps over 30 days; must include city and state of employment
- Professional references required (2 for clinical positions)
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including clearance for work
- Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually (specific mask types required)
- Immunizations and/or titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Negative TB test (QGold or TSPOT within 90 days or 2 PPDs with specific timing) with annual renewal
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive IGG titers or vaccination series with boosters as needed
- Hepatitis B series or signed declination
- Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (Nov 1 – Apr 30) or signed declination with mask requirement in patient care areas
- Drug testing as noted above
Additional Requirements and Information
- Must review and sign facility-specific documents prior to start, including job description, standards of business conduct, code of conduct, vendor training, and regulatory orientation
- TB screening questionnaire required within 90 days of start and annually thereafter
- Competency exams and skills checklists as applicable
- No prior travel experience explicitly required for this position
Summary
This is a travel/contract Labor and Delivery RN position in California requiring a California RN license, BLS, NRP, and fetal monitoring certification. The role involves night shifts with a focus on supporting physiologic birth practices in a busy unit with a large midwifery practice. Candidates must have at least 2 years of recent relevant Labor and Delivery experience and be willing to work across all areas of the unit, including circulating in Cesarean sections and postpartum care. Comprehensive background checks, health screenings, and immunizations are mandatory.
