Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
Location: Lafayette, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:00 - 6:30)
- Unit Type: Mixed Acuity Unit including Medical, PCU, Oncology, Stroke, Cardiac, Gastrointestinal, and Pulmonary care
- Patient Ratios:
- Medical-Surgical (MS) / Telemetry or PCU RNs accepted
- MS patients: 1:5-6 ratio
- PCU patients: 1:3-4 ratio
- Clinical Responsibilities:
- Care for unstable stroke patients and those requiring BiPAP
- Manage drips including Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Insulin
- Must have solid neurological nursing experience
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
- NIH Stroke Certification (required for ER RNs and stroke unit)
Licensure
- Must have Indiana state license, compact license, or Indiana temporary license in hand prior to start
- Pending license accepted if above criteria met

- Must include 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, county/state/national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS Level III
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Education Verification: Highest applicable education verified by 3rd party
- Transcript/Diploma: Official transcript or diploma required (may be pending at start)
- Physical Exam: Completed within 12 months of start date
- Fit Mask (Respirator Fit Test): Valid within 12 months, must be tested with approved respirators (3M N95 models or Honeywell N95)
- Immunizations & Health Screening:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B: Series, titer, or signed declination required
- Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31)
- Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (no instant tests)
- Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology test and unit competency exam required
- Color Blind Testing: Ishihara exam or equivalent with 100% minimum score
- References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment with supervisory titles, verified within 2 years
- Employment Application: Must be current with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
- Skills Checklist: Required within 12 months and annually thereafter
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
- Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Neurology experience
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Additional Notes
- Locals are not accepted for this travel position
- Indiana RN travelers will not be allowed to work at the facility after 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers
- On-site fit testing is limited and requires prior approval; PAPR use requires facility approval before start
- Facility-specific orientation and compliance forms must be completed as a priority prior to start
