Description
Registered Nurse (Neuro Telemetry)
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro Telemetry (5NNB and 7NNB)
Unit Size: 32 beds
Shift: Days (12-hour shifts, 7am to 7pm)
Hours per Week: 36
Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 8 weeks
Holidays: Worked into permanent holiday rotation
Patient Ratio: 1:4
EMR: Cerner (with WOWs)
Charge Nurse: Yes, with light patient assignment
Nurse Aides: Day shift - 4 aides; Night shift - 3 aides (assist with BS, VS, straight catheter)
Telemetry: Central monitoring; must be able to interpret EKG
Ventilators: No ventilator patients on this unit
Support Services:
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
- Pharmacy available 24/7 (central)
- IV Team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV sticks
Floating: Float to telemetry units and telemetry overflow in ICU
Orientation: 2 days floor-specific orientation
Common Patient Diagnoses: - Tracheostomy patients
- Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Spinal surgery
- Encephalopathy
- End-stage renal disease (ESRD)
- Psychiatric issues
- Brain tumors
Typical Length of Stay: 4-5 days
Unit Environment: Fast paced, high turnover, bedside report expected
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Arizona
- Minimum 2 years of core nursing experience in specialty (Neuro Telemetry)
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Prior travel experience required for Neuro ICU or ED (previous travel contracts must be completed)
- ACLS and BLS certifications required
- Cerner EMR experience required
- Ability to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, and Insulin
- Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam within 24-48 hours prior to position acceptance (maximum 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
- Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (skills include Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes; sterile field competency required)
- Must be able to pass Day 1 pass/fail orientation exam
- Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
- Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Must be able to interpret telemetry EKG strips
Contract Details
- Minimum contract length: 13 weeks
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
- Cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously with this employer
- Must have been off permanent staff for at least 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
- Parking provided with shuttle to facility (night shift assigned to parking garage)
- Facility is a teaching hospital; nurses may have nursing students assigned

- Hospital does not have in-house hospitalist or intensivist coverage
- Day 1 SIMs Lab includes Foley catheter insertion, central line dressing changes, lifts, restraints, and wound care education
- Candidates not competent in sterile field maintenance or required nursing skills are not a good fit
- Must be able to titrate drips such as Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem
- Fast-paced unit with high patient turnover and bedside report expected
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Telemetry RNs with trauma and travel experience who are comfortable in a fast-paced, teaching hospital environment.
