Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Level 8

Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week


Unit and Patient Information

  • Unit size: 48 beds
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Days: 1:5-7
    • Nights: 1:6-8
  • Common patient diagnoses: Pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status (AMS), GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness
  • Charge Nurse coverage:
    • Day shift has 2 charge nurses who take patient assignments
    • Night shift has 2 charge nurses scheduled; if only 1 charge nurse, they do not take patient assignments
  • Patient care techs (PCTs) or nurse aides:
    • Ratio approximately 1:10-12, may be higher
    • Duties include vitals, blood glucose monitoring (BGM), EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning

Clinical Responsibilities

  • RNs are required to titrate drips with exceptions (no cardiac drip titration)
  • Common drips include heparin, bumex, and lasix
  • Respiratory therapy (RT) staff manage breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, and respiratory equipment (BiPAP, CPAP, high flow O2)
  • RNs monitor respiratory equipment but do not administer treatments or perform checks
  • Telemetry monitoring is handled by dedicated monitor techs; RNs are not expected to read or interpret telemetry strips

Scheduling and Work Expectations

  • No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule created by manager with consideration for requested time off
  • Rotating shifts typically arranged as 2 weeks days followed by 2 weeks nights (if applicable)
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend
  • Holiday requirement: may be included in holiday rotation; holidays rotate for RNs
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Floating: may be floated to other MedSurg, MedSurg-Telemetry, or Intermediate Care units for lower acuity patients

Orientation and Training

  • Unit-specific orientation includes:
    • 1 day with educator/computer system training
    • 1 day preceptorship
  • Orientation covers 12-hour night shifts and weekend scheduling

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license
  • BLS certification
  • Minimum 1 year of MedSurg nursing experience (higher experience requirement applies)
  • First-time travel nurses are accepted
  • Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule and provide an unexpired driver’s license at submission
  • Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission

  • Dress code:
    • RN scrubs: Navy blue
    • PCT scrubs: Ceil blue
    • Secretaries: Black and pink
  • Patient care tech (PCT) class available for those interested in becoming PCT or CNA
